INTERPRETING WA DRIVER LICENSE INFORMATION

Being able to properly interpret the information on an applicant’s ID is one way to help you verify that the personal infor-
mation provided on the application for tenancy does actually belong to the person who submitted it. Use this tool to help
decipher whether or not a WA State ID or Driver’s License number is accurate.

Always check an Applicant’s Identification.

SMITH – First 5 letters of last name*


P – First name initial
D – Middle name initial
47 – Subtract from 100 to get birth year
4 – State filing number
L – Month of birth
C – Day of birth

J – April N – August R – December

B–2 Z–9 W – 16 3 – 23 T – 30

G–7 M – 14 1 – 21 8 – 28

Twins may have a slightly different coding system. If their day of birth is the 16th the last character of their ID will
be 2. All other day of birth coding is the same.

C-T – February L-3 – June P-7 – October
D-H – March M-4 – July Q-8 – November
J-1 – April N-5 – August R-9 – December
