SECTION A — (5 × 5 = 25 marks)

Answer any FIVE questions.

1. Show that f : R  R defined by f ( x )  2x  3 is a


bijection and find its universe.

2. Prove that a non empty subset H of a group G is


a subgroup of G if and only if a,bH  ab 1 H .

3. Let H be a subgroup of a group G . Show that


number of left cosets of H is the same as number
of right cosets of H .
4. Show that a subgroup N of a group G is normal if
and only if the product of two right cosets of N
again a right coset of N .

5. Show that a ring has no zero divisors if and only if


cancellation law is valid in R .

6. Show that intersection of two sub rings of a ring


R is a sub ring of R and union of two sub rings
need not be a sub ring.

7. Let a,b be two non zero elements of an integral


domain R . Show that a and b are associates if
and only if a  bu where u is a unit of R .

8. Let a,b be two non zero elements of an Enclidean


domain. Show that if b is not a unit in R , then
d( a )  d( ab) .

9. (a) Show that any permutation can be expressed


as a product of disjoint cycles.
(b) Let An be set of all even permutations in Sn .

10. Let A, B be two subgroups of a group G . Show
that AB is a sub group of G if and only if
AB  BA .

11. State and prove Cayley’s theorem.

12. For any group G , show that

(a) Aut (G ) is also a group and

(b) I (G ) is a normal sub group of Aut (G ) .

13. (a) Show that any finite integral domain in a


field.
(b) Prove that the characteristic of an integral
domain D is either a prime number or zero.

14. (a) Let R be a commutative ring with identity.


Show that R is a field if and only if R has
no proper ideal.
(b) Let P be an ideal of a commutative ring R
with identity. Show that P is a prime ideal
if and only if R / P is an integral domain.

15. Show that any integral domain D can be


embedded in a field F .

16. (a) Show that every ideal of an Euclidean
domain is a principal ideal.
(b) Show that in an Euclidean domain R , any
two elements a,b R have a g.c.d and it is of
the form ax  by where x , y R .

of a projectile.

(e) Frequency of a projectile.

8. Show that the motion of a particle under a central


force is coplanar.

9. Define skewness and kurtosis of a given set of


data. Write their uses.

11. In a sequence of Bernoulli trials, let X be the
