CALBAYOG CITY – A catchwall with a project cost of P88.7 million along the national
highway in Barangay Cagmanipis, Calbayog City has recently been completed, the Department
of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.
Measuring a total area of 8,773.78 square meters and a length of 515.12 linear meters,
the project prevents debris of soil and rocks from sliding to the road due to abrupt collapse
of weakened slope brought upon by heavy rains, natural ground movement or in extreme
cases, earthquake.
It can be recalled that in the year of 2017 alone, heavy downpour caused by varying
tropical storms resulted into different cases of landslides. Aside from the millions worth of
damages, these events gave hundreds of commuters a major inconvenience due to the main
road being covered by fragments of rocks and mud.
Nevertheless, everything is all in the past and Samar First District Engineering Office
(SFDEO) is optimistic that occurences like these are now less likely to happen again
With the newly-constructed catchwall along the highway, SFDEO foresees the decrease
of accidents brought upon by landslides. Its completion is just timely as well with the onset of
the summer rain and the forthcoming opening of classes.
