Entry Examination for MSc Structural Geology with Geophysics

Time allowed: 2 hours

Preparation for the examination

The purpose of this examination is to ensure that applicants of the MSc Structural Geology with
Geophysics begin the course with an appropriate level of background knowledge. If you are unable to
undertake the tasks in this exam you will find the MSc very challenging from the beginning.

The examination involves analysing a geological map with structural and stratigraphic information and
will require you to draw an accurate cross-section and make a summary geological history. Prior to
undertaking the examination it is suggested that you remind yourself of cross-section construction and
how to use structural (or strike) contours.

To ensure that the examination reflects the true ability of the candidate, a further examination on similar
material will be undertaken on arrival in Leeds. YOU MAY BE DENIED ENTRY ONTO THE COURSE
IF THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN MARKS BETWEEN THE TWO PAPERS.

Two useful books for revision are:

Bennison, G.M. and Moseley, KA An introduction to geological structures and maps - 7th ed. Arnold,
2003 (but any edition will do). Good self-help book that you can use to teach yourself the basics, enough
to do this test.

Maltman, Alex. “Geological Maps: An introduction” 2nd edition. This is a more extensive book that
includes more realistic (and difficult) problems

YOU ARE PROVIDED WITH

1. Cover Sheet (this sheet)

2. Question Sheet
3. Geological Map
4. Geological Column and Key

Write in the diagram sheet and continue on additional paper as required

Ensure that your name is on each paper that is submitted.

YOU WILL REQUIRE

Lined paper for your answer

Graph paper (A4) for a cross-section
Writing pen and pencil, and coloured pencils
Ruler

Write on the diagram sheets, continuing onto lined paper as required.

Ensure that your name is completed on ALL submitted documents.

will be moderated by a second marker. The resulting mark will in part be used to determine the outcome
of your application.

On the first day of the MSc course you will have to sit an examination paper that is at a similar level to
this paper.

YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO PERFORM AT A SIMILAR LEVEL IN BOTH PAPERS, THEREFORE IT

IS IMPORTANT THAT THIS EXAM REFLECTS YOUR ABILITY/BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE. YOU
MAY BE DENIED ENTRY ONTO THE COURSE IF THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN
MARKS BETWEEN THE TWO PAPERS.

BEGINNING OF EXAMINATION QUESTION

This paper consists of ONE question that comprises Part A, Part B, and Part C. You must answer all
three parts.

Figure 1 is a geological map that shows an area with a range of geological structures
Figure 2 is the stratigraphic column that includes information on the sedimentology of the formations.

Use both of there figures in answering Parts A, B and C.

Part A: Draw a true scale cross-section between Y and Z. Show the geology to depth and above the
topography.

Part B: Redraw the stratigraphic column to show the true thickness of the formations.

Part C: Use all of the information available to write a short geological history of this area including,
where appropriate, the environment of deposition and the orientation of the structures formed.
