Anaesthesia Department

The department has three Operating Theatres. Two are within the Main Theatre out of which
one is ear marked for Emergency surgical cases only; the other is for Planned or Cold
Surgical cases. The third is detached and used mainly for Opthalmological surgical patients.

The department is manned by four anaesthetists Messrs Tuuli Lawrence Gaamuo (the
Head), Macdonald Ashong (Deputy), Obeng Kyei Andrews and Aboagye Mensah-Bonsu.

The department operates 24 hours throughout the year. Anaesthesia is administered for
Obstetrics and Gynaecological, Paediatrics, Urological, Ophthalmological and General
Surgical cases. We embark on:
 General
 Spinal
 Regional and
 Local anaesthesia

The services extent to the rest of the wards when they have difficulties in lumbar puncture,
cannulating veins and administration of Oxygen.

The department is endowed with the most modern anaesthetic machines in the world. We
are most grateful to ANESVAD, the Buruli Ulcer Programme and benefactors who actually
finance these machines. Interestingly, we still have functionable EMOs that are in our
archives and used for tutorials since we train House Officers in this discipline. It's our hope
that one student under training at the school of Anaesthesia, Komfo Anokye Teaching
Hospital (KATH) Kumasi will join us at the end of the day to ease pressure and overload of
duty put on us
