ASSIGNMENT 2: Week-end Romanesque à Étretat

A weekend inside a novel called Étretat

It is useless to go to the end of the world to change of scene and discover mysteries, unique

flavours and surprising landscapes. You will find happiness in Étretat and its cliffs. It is the ideal

place for a romantic or family weekend. The flickering light goes through the whole range of

greens, picking out the infinite nuances of these spectacular architectural works of chalk which

are sometimes enshrouded in mist and other times striking out into the bright sunlight. Corot,

Monet, Courbet, Matisse and many other painters have historically immortalized this unique

location that now appears in the greatest museums of the world. Important writers have also

been interested in this village, such as Victor Hugo, Maupassant or André Gide. On top of that,

in Étretat it was filmed Arsène Lupin, which adapts with the participation of Kristin Scott-Thomas

the story of The Hollow Needle written by Maurice Leblanc.

The beach possesses an unusual beauty thanks to the enormous pebbles covering it. The classic

of Étretat is the walk on the high chalk cliffs. On the one hand, we have the Cliff of Aval, with its

natural arch, its famous needle and its cave called the Hole of the Man. On the other hand, we

have The Cliff of Amont with its monument dedicated to the airmen Nungesser and Coli, and

beyond, there are lands, cultivated fields and grazing.

The Domaine Saint Clair is the place to enjoy the delights of this stay. It is composed of a seaside

villa and a small nineteenth-century castle with a dungeon. Finally, what is worth to mention of

this unique place is the fine cuisine with Mediterranean influences, the great park, the pool in

the shade of ancient pines or the breathtaking views.
