Geolog® 7 – Paradigm™ 2011 Changes in Geolog 7 1-1

With Epos® 4.1 Data Management
Introduction
Geolog 7 has undergone major changes with a new Qt interface, Loglan available as a document view only,
removal of the Connect application, new import and export functionality in the Catalog views, right-click
menus, drag and drop functionality to name a few. This document gives a summary of the major changes,
where commands are accessed and a description about the compatibility between Geolog 7 and earlier
versions.

Where is Connect?
The Connect application has been removed in Geolog 7. Individual data files can be imported using the new
Standard File Import view, multiple data files using File Catalog. Text files can be imported using the
Custom Text Importer.
Table 1-1, "Menu Commands" on page 1-3 shows where to access the Connect commands that have been
moved into the File Importer, File Catalog, Well Catalog and Mapsheet document views.

Where is Loglan?
In Geolog 7, Loglan is no longer available as an application but as a document view and is accessed via the
Well or Project applications.

User Interface

Introducing the New Tab

You can access all document views available within the open Geolog application such as Well, Project via
the New Tab window.

What Happened to the Sidebar?

The Sidebar was a container for the Datum, Files and Menu tabs. The Sidebar has been replaced with a
docking area for dockable windows such as those that have replaced the Datum, Files and Menu tabs.
The Datum tab has been replaced by the Wells and Ranges windows. The Files tab has been replaced by
the Files window. The Menu tab has been replaced by the General, Petrophysics, Geology and Geophysics
Menu windows.

With Epos® 4.1 Data Management
NOTE The Wells window is not displayed in Project as wells to process are selected in the
Mapsheet and Well Catalog document views.

Menus
From Geolog 7, the menus displayed in the menu bar and toolbar areas of the applications cannot be
customized.
The Petrophysics, Geology, Geophysics and General menus, are no longer displayed on the application
menu bar but are available as Menu windows. By default, these Menu windows are not displayed on the
Windows menu. The required .mmu files must be opened – select File > Open > Open Menu.

Custom Menus

Custom menus created in previous versions of Geolog can be accessed in Geolog 7 via the Windows menu.
Custom menus are created and populated within the user interface – see “Custom Menus” on page 5-35 for
more information.
A custom menu must first be opened (select File > Open > Open Menu) before it can be displayed in the
Windows menu. The custom menu item will persist as an option in an application’s Windows menu even
when the application is closed and reopened.
You can add, move and delete items in a user defined menu see “Custom Menus” on page 5-35 for more
information.

Additional Mouse Scroll Wheel Functions

To... do this...
Scroll vertically Move the mouse scroll wheel up or down
Scroll horizontally Press [ALT] + mouse scroll wheel
Page scroll vertically Press [SHIFT] + mouse scroll wheel
Zoom in or out of a Geolog view Press [CTRL] + mouse scroll wheel

How are wells to process selected in Project?

Geolog’s Project application is designed to deal with large numbers of wells and the Wells list on the Datum
tab prior to Geolog 7 was not very efficient for selecting wells to process or useful for determining what wells
were selected. In Geolog 7, the wells open in Project can still be limited using a Wells list and the wells to
process can be selected via a mapsheet or well catalog – hence a Wells window is not required in Project.

About the Primary Well Identifier (PWI)

The PWI identifies what "key" is used for wells in the project. Typically, the PWI is meant to be set once
and used for all wells in a project; it is not meant to allow some wells in a project to use Well Name, others
use API number and others to use something else. Setting the PWI is more applicable at project creation

and so in Geolog 7 is set on the New Project dialog box for a new project and changed for an exisiting project
via an option on the Launcher Bar’s Administration menu.

What’s happened to Section?

Section still exists as an application but has been replaced as a document view with the Line of Section. The
Line of Section view can be used to display 2D geological cross sections with wells projected on to them. The
Line of Section view also allows for display of intervals, along with insertion and display of fluid contacts
and faults. Line of Section also allows for display of inter-well data using tops data from an interval set from
displayed wells or data from a Geolog-based 3D model.
Fixed well spacing and correlation functionality is handled in Correlation.

WELL.PROJECT.unl File
A new surface scheme called Fluid Contacts has been added to the WELL_PROJECT.unl file that is
provided as a part of the Geolog7 installation. This surface scheme can be used to define the three possible
fluid contacts; GO, GW and OW.

The WELL_PROJECT.unl file contains both a default CHRONOSTRATIGRAPHY and

FLUID_CONTACTS sets. If you already have a customized CHRONOSTRATIGRAPHY
set, it is recommended that you exclude that set when importing the data file.

With Epos® 4.1 Data Management
Compatibility

This section details the compatibility between Geolog 7 and earlier versions of Geolog.

Support Removed
Support has been removed for the following:
• Digitizing
• Magnetic tapes – there is no longer direct loading/unloading to and from magnetic tapes. Data
can be copied using the File Catalog – TIF & Tape Copy and then imported/exported.

File Formats
There are no changes to the file formats in the database.

Database Format
Support has been added for array constants, that is array constants can now be imported and stored in
Geolog.
The Geolog 7 database is backward compatible.

Name Translation
Previously, Geolog used name translation files to translate Well Header constants to standard Geolog
names when loading well data. This is no longer required (nor desired) as this is now handled by aliasing.
Additionally, constants are now stored in their original contractor format name and with the Set specified
on import.

Commands (aliases)
Most scripts created for earlier versions of Geolog will run in Geolog 7. However, scripts relating to removed
functionality (e.g. tape loading) will not work and scripts that relate to areas of changed functionality will
need to be updated.

Menus
The Geolog application and document menu files .mmu are no longer stored in the app-defaults directory
and therefore cannot be changed.
In Geolog 7, supplemental (user defined) menus created in earlier versions of Geolog will be displayed/
available in separate menu windows but will no longer be displayed on an application menu bar or as menu
items in an application menu.

Geolog® 7 – Paradigm™ 2011 Changes in Geolog 7 1-8

With Epos® 4.1 Data Management
Workspaces
Workspaces from earlier versions can be opened in Geolog 7 but the arrangement of the windows will not
be maintained due to the significant change in how the geometry of windows is managed.

Layouts
Multiple header and footer picture are no longer supported. Layout in Geolog 7 supports a single header
picture and a single footer picture.
For existing layouts that have more than one header or footer picture the additional pictures will be
positioned relative to the border.

corEVAL and Core Analysis

CorEVAL writes FWL contants and logs to the database as negative values. These are represented as
elevations.
Core Analysis writes fluid level constants and logs to the database as (usually) positive values represented
in TVDSS.
Consequently there is an incompatibility between CorEVAL FWLs and Core Analysis fluid levels. Any
existing CorEVAL FWL constants or logs should be deleted before using Core Analysis. If customers want
to keep the CorEVAL values, they should use a different name (other than FWL) for these fluid levels in
Core Analysis.
