THE CHALLENGE
Planning requirements for this large
retail development dictated that a
sustainable drainage solution was
required in the form of a permeable
pavement for the 2800 m2 parking
area. Tarmac was contacted by
the designer Pick Everard about
the proposed pavement design.
The finished pavement needed
to be durable enough to resist
the expected traffic volumes, but
also be free-draining to avoid
standing water and overloading
of local drainage systems.

OUR SOLUTION
Tarmac proposed the use of Topmix
Permeable, an advanced permeable
concrete solution, as a full infiltration
system. This system has a number of
benefits, one of these being that it
can be installed 'in-house' by
the Tarmac Specialist Concrete
Installations team. It is installed in a
single layer that is suitable for
trafficking, is highly permeable and
enables the water attenuation
requirements on site to be met.
RESULTS AND BENEFITS
As this part of the project began in
late October, seasonal weather
presented a challenge. However,
because the surface was being
produced and installed by Tarmac,
close contact could be maintained
between the Tarmac teams to
ensure that site conditions could be
monitored and a continuous supply
of timed concrete deliveries made as
needed. The project was delivered to
schedule, on budget and to the
agreed design specification. Already,
despite recent heavy rainfall the
pavement has proven to be
free-draining and is delivering the
water attenuation required by the
designer.
