Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

Senior High School (SHS) is the new Grade Level added by the Department of Education

(DepEd) in the Philippines. According to K-12 curriculum, junior high school students must

first finish senior high school to be considered as secondary school graduates. In this added

form of education, many adjustments are needed to be done in the different grade levels to

make the teaching instruction effective.

The Department of Education (DepEd) reported that senior high school enrolment in

2016 reached 1,029, 047 in 1600 schools (Rappler, 2013). In Agusan del Sur National High

School (ASNHS), the school estimates that there are more than 700 of Grade 12 enrolees in

Senior High School in different tracks and strands in SY. 2018-2019. However, the

establishments of the school for senior high are not totally or completely built. So the school

Principal innovated and implemented double shifting in the different grade levels except of

the Grade 12 level.

Overcrowded classrooms have a direct impact for the students in learning. Overcrowding

has sadly become the new normal (Meador, 2018). Most of the problems met are losing of

teachers’ efficiency, physical conditions of the classroom and condition for the students.

Teachers like to teach small classes (in size) because they are easier to handle (Shah,

2012).On the other hand, Students who are seated close to one another in a classroom might

have difficulty focusing on the lessons, which leads to less learning and lower test scores

(May, 2017).

Due to these arising problems, the researchers investigate if the current

population of Grade 12 senior high school affect the satisfactory of classrooms in terms of

physical facilities and environmental conditions. This helped the school to determine which

aspects in the classroom need important to effectively facilitate students learning in the

classroom.

Figure 1, shows the independent variable which is the population of Grade 12 Senior

High School in classroom buildings for S.Y. 2018-2019 and its relationship to the dependent

variable which is the satisfactory of classroom facilities and environmental conditions. The

researchers would like to investigate if the population state of Grade 12 Senior High School can

affect the sufficiency of Classroom Facilities and Environmental conditions.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the classroom population size of Grade 12 Senior

High School Students and its effect to the satisfactory of classroom facilities and

environmental conditions.

Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following problems:

1. What is the population size of Grade 12 senior high students in terms of building

classification?

2. Is there a significant relationship between the classroom population size of Grade 12

Senior High Students and the satisfactory of physical activities?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the classroom population size of Grade 12

Senior High Students and the satisfactory of environmental conditions?

1.4 Null Hypothesis

Based on the search problems, the following null hypothesis are made:

Ho1: There is no significant relationship between the classroom population size of grade

12 Senior High Students and the satisfactory of physical activities.

Ho2: There is no significant relationship between the classroom population size of grade

12 Senior High Students and the satisfactory of environmental conditions.

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study aims to provide information regarding the effects of the grade 12 senior high

students to the satisfactory of classroom physical facilities and environmental condition.

The study would be beneficial and relevant to the following:

Parents. They will be aware about the number of the students for each class in Agusan del

Sur National High School

Students. This study will helps them to know if they are over populated or not.

Teachers and Administrative Staff. It will help them to assess the classroom satisfactory of

classroom facilities and environmental conditions. It will also aid them to determine how many

students should be admitted to one classroom.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation

This study was conducted on February 6, 2019 at Agusan del Sur National High School

with a 64,000 square meters and 6 000 total number of students. Having 769 Grade 12 Senior

High School Students with the use of random sampling, the total respondents will only be 263.

1.7 Definition of Terms

In order to provide clarity, the following terminologies are conceptually operationally

defined.

Classroom Population - The number of learners within the vicinity of the certain room.

Environmental Conditions- a state of environment in the classroom buildings of grade 12

Senior High School Students.

Physical Facilities- something (such buildings or large piece of equipment) that is built for

specific purpose; the facilities provided to students.

Population – the number of students in Grade 12 Senior High School.
