Introduction

The use of gateway drugs such as alcohol and cigarettes among

students had been alarmingly increasing which led us to
conduct this study. The topic was chosen to know the effects
of drinking alcohol on students as users and to know why they
are using this gateway drug.

Drinking alcohol has many negative effects that users should

have knowledge of before they get addicted to this gateway
drug. Alcohol is a key contributor to the leading death among
10 to 24 years- motor vehicle mortality, suicide and other
unintentional injuries (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, 2007). Also, alcohol may be associated with
increased frequency of drinking, tobacco and cigarette use,
truancy from school, violent behavior and exposure to illegal
drugs.

The study was conducted at Guisad Valley National High School

located at Baguio City wherein the focus group are those
Senior High students from different strands who are consuming
alcoholic drinks. Data included 80 adolescents who
participated in our survey and claimed to have been consuming
alcohol.

Moreover, it aims to know the reasons of the students in

drinking alcohol and what benefit do they get from it. It also
attempts to examine the effects of alcohol use on students’
behavior and quality learning.
