Rath Yatra celebrated in Atlantic City
By Subrata Chowdhury
Rath Yatra, the festival of chariots of Lord Jagannath was celebrated
in Atlantic City on Saturday, July 06. The Hindus from all over New
Jersey and adjacent states gathered at Atlantic City to be a part of this
auspicious occasion. The chariots, or the Rath, were beautifully
decorated with colorful flags and other adornments. People celebrated
this festival with great sacredness and sanctity. The devotees consider it
to be a sacrosanct act to draw the chariots with a large rope. The Hindu
devotees even consider it to be a sanctified act if they can even touch the
chariot.
The Rath Yatra started at 2:00 pm from Arkansas Avenue &
Boardwalk, and ended at Garden Pier (New Jersey Avenue &
Boardwalk).
The Rath Yatra festival included Kirtan, music & dance, free
vegetarian feast, books and gifts. The festival ended at evening.
