THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE

The simple past tense is used to talk about completed action in a time before now.

The forms of the simple present


 The affirmative form of the simple past:
 Subject + past form of the verb + object

Subject verb object


I, you, we, they watched movie
He ,she, it

Examples:

1. I ate pizza.
2. They studied English.
3. She wrote a diary.

 Word Order of Negative Sentences

The following is the word order to construct a basic negative sentence in English in the
Past Tense using did not/didn’t.

 The negative form of past simple


 Subject + did not/ didn’t + base form of the verb +object

Subject Did not/ didn’t verb Object


I, You, We ,They did not/ didn’t watch movie
He, She, It

Examples:

1. We didn’t eat fruits yesterday.


2. She didn’t learn Jazz.
3. It didn’t have a vaccination.
Word Order of Questions with Did

The following is the word order to construct a basic question in English using Did

 The interrogative form of past simple:


 Did + subject + verb + object?

Did Subject Verb* Object


Did I, You, We, They Watch movie?
Did He, She, It watch movie?

Examples:

1. Did you need a dictionary?


2. Did he like pizza?
3. Did they study English?

The use of the simple past:


The simple past is used:

 to talk about completed action:

1. I jumped over the dog.

3. I turned off the TV.
