Reflection Paper: Fetal Pig Autopsy Report

I chose this piece of work since I am very interested in science and plan on becoming a doctor or

possible if I continue to pursue education in the medical field become a surgeon. This autopsy that we

performed on the pig was very educational and also correlated to what the course is about. Being able to

perform autopsies is an important part of solving crimes that involve an injury or death to a victim as it

helps investigators understand what possibly had happened in the case of a crime. Also, it was a great

“hands on” type of lab which was great for me as it was the first autopsy I had ever participated in.

As part of being a forensics investigator, it is important to acquire more information since it is

beneficial to a case. Learning how to perform autopsies correctly and being able to note all the details

helps the case. Part of my school’s School-wide Learners Outcome (SLOs) I am acquiring information to

solve problems, which not only is important to any assignment but for specific career interests such as

being an autopsy specialist it helps to get a touch of what is to come.

There were some obstacles that were present in the autopsy. For one, having to actually do the

autopsy and being able to do the incisions and take the internal organs out for further analysis without

causing other damage. We overcame this as a group since we had all worked together to breakdown the

information from a guide for piglet dissections. I for one gained a better understanding of what needed to

be done and what to look for while performing the autopsy which did improve the speed at which we

worked.

If I was to re-do this assignment I would try to have more time to work, the time was limited, but

we were told before actually starting, however as a group we weren’t as fast and missed some pieces of

the report, but it was close to done which was good. I would also gone more in depth to the guide to

understand what we were actually going to, to ask questions to make sure everyone is on the same page,

since not everyone in my group worked at the same pace which did make it somewhat difficult.
