ZF Supershift 2 – the evolution
of shifting technology
ZF Marine Propulsion Systems introduced
Supershift technology to our marine transmis-
sions over ten years ago. At that time, Super-
shift created the benchmark for shifting techno-
logy in high horsepower marine transmissions.
Customer demands are ever changing and never
less demanding. Supershift 2 is the next
generation in shift technology, designed to
exceed customer expectations for shift comfort
and control while maintaining the right amount
of shift feel that operators have come to expect.
Our engineers evaluated every system of the
ZF Marine Propulsion Systems marine trans-
mission to see where improvements and effi-
ciency gains could be made. We drew from our
superior transmission technology base, having
launched the world‘s first 8- and 9-speed auto-
matic transmissions for passenger cars and light
trucks. In addition, we talked to vessel builders and
operators, getting their feedback on what would

Improving shift speed and comfort doesn’t need
to involve a whole new approach when you’re a
world leader in transmission technology.
An improved clutch pack design, combined with
a more efficient hydraulic system, negates the
need for the additional hydraulic circuit seen in
other commercially available marine transmissions.
The result is, shifting response the market demands
utilizing less parts for a more robust design.
The aforementioned product design improve-
ments, have resulted in transmissions that react
to shift input signals almost instantaneously, with
less drop in engine RPM, offering passengers a
smooth shift for total comfort. SUPERSHIFT 2
combined with our proven AUTOTROLL® functio-
nality sets a new standard in safe and slow speed
manoeuvering. Best of all, high horsepower
ZF marine transmissions now incorporate Super-
shift 2 as standard equipment.
