2 SUMMERFEST 2019
ABOUT
Our mission is to provide free and low-cost music performance
education for students in our community while cultivating a
love of the performing arts through public concerts featuring
world-class musicians and interdisciplinary collaborations
among the arts, sciences, and humanities.

Now in our seventh year of a growing music education program and eighth
summer music festival, Off the Hook Arts was originally founded as PYCH
(‘Pitch’) Project Youth and Chamber Music in 2012. Based in Fort Collins, we
encourage life-long creativity and arts appreciation in Northern Colorado.
We present unique and diverse events through the performance of classical
music, and collaborations with scientists and creative thinkers, and bring the
experience of world-class music to new audiences of all ages. We support
continued growth in performers and arts appreciators alike, and encourage
audiences to champion a vibrant local arts culture.

Every season we select a different science-oriented theme to combine

with the arts for our music festivals – WinterFest and SummerFest. These
collaborations result in unique and diverse events that feature topics such as
neuroscience, human rights, climate change, and this year’s theme, illusions of
the mind. All involve some new compositional project of our Artistic Director —
NY based composer, Resident Lecturer and Director of Family Concerts at The
Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center — Bruce Adolphe.

All funds raised through festivals and donations go toward supporting our music
education programming for children. Off the Hook Arts is a 501(c)3 non-profit music
education program in Fort Collins, CO. (EID: 45-5161400).

SUMMERFEST 2019

PERCEPTION, DECEPTION.
ILLUSION, CONFUSION.

Off the Hook Arts SummerFest 2019: Perception/Deception, Illusion/

Confusion brings together music, neuroscience, psychology, magic, comedy,
painting, and photography in a unique festival to explore the mysteries,
methods, facts, and fantasies of human perception, and to uncover techniques
of deception and illusion in the arts and in life.

The seven-part Concert Series and eight-part, interdisciplinary Dynamics

Series feature world-class musicians in intimate settings with programs that
imagine alternate realities (what would Chopin sound like as a pianist working
in NYC today?), search for the ghosts that “haunt” certain great works, and
reveal the secrets of deception and humor in works of music and art. The
Viewpoints Series of lectures explores topics of cognitive psychology and the
arts. Other SummerFest 2019 activities include an art show and the Off the
Hook Arts Summer Academy, offering music, art, and STEM programming for
children of all ages.

4 SUMMERFEST 2019
VIEWPOINTS SERIES
Discussions of perception and illusion from the viewpoint
of psychology, neuroscience, art, music, and magic.
Scientists, artists, musicians, and professors see the
world from particular vantage points that illuminate who
we are and the urgent issues of our time. Scientists give us a
clear view of problems and possible solutions, while artists and
musicians inspire us to come together to work toward those solutions. This series
of talks brings our community into direct contact with the thinkers and doers
whose voices need to be heard.

DYNAMICS SERIES
Featuring SummerFest guest lecturers and festival artists,
consilience (agreement among varied approaches to a
topic, especially science and the humanities) is the driving
concept of the DYNAMICS series. Bringing scientists into
our music festival sparks an exchange of modes of thinking and
feeling. Inspired and uplifted by chamber music performed at
the highest level, our audiences are primed to experience provocative talks on
significant issues of our time. The essence of this experience is a raised awareness
of our common humanity — our common passions and ideas — and the dynamic
forces at work in our world today.

CONCERT SERIES
Music is a powerful force — it unites diverse communities,
brings people together to experience the uplifting spiritual,
emotional, and intellectual aspects of our humanity. With
music as a catalyst, OtH Arts seeks to unite and inspire
our audiences to feel, think, and act together to explore and
understand how we humans behave. This summer, we focus on
aspects of perception. Music has been shown to change our moods, affect our
visual perception (think of movies), and shape how we think.

A noTE FROM
THE BOARD
Dear Friends and Supporters,

The Board of Directors of Off the Hook Arts is delighted to

welcome you to SummerFest 2019: Perception, Deception.
Illusion, Confusion. Our incredible journey is continuing as you
are about to attend another of our Festivals, presenting new
artists as well as some of our keynote regular performers, local
and visiting; storytellers; lecturers; and many other musicians, artists,
poets, singers, photographers, and speakers. We are thrilled to be able to bring you
such talent and diversity, and let you discover the intersection of music and ideas. Our
themes are meant to inspire, deepen your appreciation of music and the performing
arts, and encourage exploration.

SummerFest 2019 is a month-long community cultural festival which brings together

music, neuroscience, psychology, magic, comedy, painting, and photography to
explore human perception and techniques of deception and illusion in the arts and in
life.

SummerFest features three distinct series of concerts and events, Image and Illusion -
an art show - and the Off the Hook Arts Summer Academy with Music, Art and STEM
programming for children of all ages. The seven-part Concert Series and eight-part,
interdisciplinary Dynamics Series feature fascinating programs in traditional and non-
traditional venues which allow audiences uniquely intimate access to internationally-
acclaimed performers and speakers. The Viewpoints Series presents one-hour
lunchtime talks on cognitive psychology topics in comfortable community gathering
places throughout Fort Collins.

8 SUMMERFEST 2019
Each year we are joined by new friends and supporters and the biggest compliment
you could give us is to tell your family and friends about our events and encourage
them to come. We welcome your feedback any time throughout the year and
encourage participation on whatever level you desire. Feel free to talk to any board
member about ways to get involved.

We continue to expand community partnerships and believe in the strength of

collaboration. If you happen to be a sponsor or donor attending this festival, we
couldn’t have done this without you. Your support continues to help us provide
these magnificent events to our community. May this be one of the most fruitful
years yet for our ever growing organization.

Stay connected with us! Join our mailing list, follow us or volunteer on a
committee.

We thank you for your continued support, and I hope to have the opportunity to
meet every one of you during the SummerFest.

SUMMERFEST 2019 11
A noTE FROM THE
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Whenever I meet listeners to my piano puzzler radio segment on
Performance Today, they are likely to say, “You look different
than I had imagined.” But when I ask the same people what they
imagine when they hear my voice, they usually say something
like, “I don’t know exactly. But not you.” This is a well-known
phenomenon of radio perception. Last year, I had the pleasure of
doing a fundraiser for a public radio station in Virginia with Fred Child
and Robert Siegel. When Bob came on stage, he said to the audience of about 1,000
people, “You all look different than I had imagined.” Huge laugh.

When we hear a person’s voice on the radio or when we hear music or see a photograph
or painting, what happens in our minds? What are common denominators of
perception?

A composer, photographer, or painter is likely to deliberately create some deception

as a matter of course, to pull you in or keep your attention. For example, in a lot of
music composers use a variety of “deceptive cadences” to keep the listener engaged,
in suspense, attentive, waiting for the final cadence, when the narrative tension of
the musical structure is resolved. In representational painting, “perspective” is a form
of visual deception that we have long accepted, but there are many ways an artist
can confuse and amuse your perception in terms of color, shape, texture, dimension,
and proportion. Comedians use deception to get laughs and magicians deceive you
completely when they do their job well. And of course, there is the art of illusion, with
everything from optical illusions to magic — all forms of deception and confusion.

This summer, we are thrilled to present neuroscientists, psychologists, visual artists,

a mathemagician, a comedy writer, and, of course, a stunning array of world-class
musicians playing classical music, world premieres, and jazz.

If you have ever been confused, this is the festival for you!

MUSIC. GET INSPIRED.
At the heart of all we do, Off the Hook Arts (OTHA) offers low-cost, classical music
education and performance for students aged 6 through college years.

OTHA operates at the intersection of the arts and ideas. For seven years, OTHA
has offered a unique blend of music, arts, and science education. We cultivate
a love of the arts through a stellar array of concerts and events that combine
performance with important topics in science, giving attendees and students a
broad view of their world and their place in it. We produce two annual festivals
— SummerFest and WinterFest — featuring nationally recognized musicians and
thought leaders in arts and sciences. Festival ticket proceeds provide student
scholarships.

OTHA believes strongly in the value and lifelong impact of music education.
Research from the University of Southern California shows that benefits to health,
well-being, and lifelong learning include a greater ability to focus and concentrate
on tasks; improved scores in math; higher IQ; and improved group cooperation,
teamwork, and leadership skills all can come from music education delivered at an
early age. Like learning any new language, mastering classical music takes effort,

14 SUMMERFEST 2019
concentration, persistence, and self-discipline.
The benefits of all these life skills apply to school,
family, and work settings.

During the first few days of Off the Hook Arts’ SummerFest 2019, a select group of cognitive
scientists from around the world will be convening in Fort Collins for a mini-conference
on perceptual and cognitive illusions and other oddities of our everyday impressions and
experiences. Many of the scientists in attendance are authors of interesting books. In fact,
many of the attendees will be contributing chapters to an edited book under contract with
Routledge called “Memory Quirks: The Study of Odd Phenomena in Memory,” and they will
be convening to discuss their in-progress chapter contributions to this unique book. Others
will be presenting their latest research on perception, memory and cognition and yet others
will simply attend to hear about and discuss ongoing research, and issues in the field.

Members of the public are welcome to attend pending seating availability. If interested, please
email Anne.Cleary@colostate.edu to be added to a wait list, with admittance occurring on a first-

Speaker: David Misch, Comedian, Writer, and Producer

A duck, an iguana, and a priest go into a bar to find out how guffaws depend on
misdirection, deception, ambiguity, and randomness. (Note: Duck, iguana, priest, and bar
not included.)

David Misch will explore the unexpected congruities between science and
comedy. While one shoots for Nobel Prizes and the other for fat guys falling
over, the funnier one uses scientific spheres like anthropology, neurology, and
psychology for its effects. With the aid of copious comedy clips, David shows how
deception, ambiguity, pattern recognition, evolution, and error-related negativity
make you spit up your milk.

Speakers: Stephen Macknik, Ph.D. and professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology,

and Physiology & Pharmacology; and Susana Martinez-Conde, Ph.D. and professor
of Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Physiology & Pharmacology

Profs. Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde have studied the

neuroscience of sensory and cognitive illusions in their laboratories for almost two
decades, and promoted them to general audiences as an exciting and spectacular
tool to confront our wider misperceptions and sharpen our critical thinking skills in
our so-called-‘post-truth’ era.

In Champions of Illusion, Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde present

a smorgasbord of mystifying images, many selected from their Best Illusion of the
Year Contest. Whether it’s false motion, tricks of perspective, or shifting colors,
Champions of Illusion is packed with adventures in visual perception. If you have
ever found yourself face-to-face with an utterly bewildering illusion, you know
the powerful effect such images have on the mind. The question we often ask
ourselves is, How is that possible? Martinez-Conde and Macknik, who study the
intersection of neuroscience, illusions, and stage magic, explain just why we think
we see the things we see.

The Best Illusion of the Year Contest draws entries from vision scientists, artists,
magicians, and mathematicians bent on creating today’s most beguiling illusions.
Featuring the contest’s most bizarre effects and unbelievable mind tricks, along
with classic illusions and illuminating descriptions of what is actually going on in
your brain when you are deceived by visuals on the page, Champions of Illusion is
an electrifying mix of science and magic that you will not soon forget.

Speaker: Jessica Witt, Ph.D. and CSU Professor of Cognitive Psychology

Remember #TheDress? Some people saw a white and gold dress yet others
saw a blue and black dress. People have the impression that they see the world

Renowned Colorado painter Haley Hasler, whose work will be shown in the Art
Show at the Carnegie Center for Creativity, discusses how historical images and
techniques play a role in her work with Bruce Adolphe, whose music similarly
reacts to music of the past. Join us at 5:30pm for this eye-opening artist talk,
stay for a gourmet reception and musical performance by Zach Brock, Grammy-
winning jazz violinist, and jazz giant, pianist Art Lande. Program to be announced

When Change in Awareness is Experienced in the Absence of Changing Stimulation

Speaker: Assal Habibi, Ph.D. and Assistant Research Professor of Psychology

Did you ever notice what happens when you look at an ambiguous figure?
Your perception is unstable, changing spontaneously between two possible
interpretations. The fact is perception is an active process whereby the brain seeks
to interpret the world around us. When sensory input is ambiguous, perception
tends to fluctuate over time and allows for multiple, competing perceptual
interpretations — in other words bistable perception. In this talk, we will review
what is known about bistable perception, the brain mechanisms underlying this
process, and how we can learn about human behavior by understanding how we
perceive ambiguity.

Puzzler by Bruce Adolphe. Piano Puzzlers present perceptual problems and
confusing keyboard conundrums (no drums needed). In this program, three
scientists join Bruce in examining musical confusion and clarity, followed by a one-

Speaker: Jennifer Harman, Ph.D. and CSU Associate Professor of Psychology

Many children reject or refuse to have a relationship with a loving parent, and it is
often hard for people to understand the cause of this rejection. Often, the parent
who is rejected is blamed, as observers assume that they must be abusive or have
done something wrong to make the child act that way. This talk will explore a form
of family violence known as parental alienation, which is when a child rejects a
parent for untrue, exaggerated, or unjustifiable reasons. The cause of this rejection
and the child’s behaviors run counterintuitive to what we might expect, yet are
fully explicable once the true cause is exposed.

Wrapping Our Heads Around Reality in the Study of Nature

Speaker: Scott Denning, Ph.D. and CSU Professor of Atmospheric Sciences

How can we know what is true about the natural world and our place in
it? Historian Yuval Harari says the modern age began with the “discovery of
ignorance,” when we began to doubt what had previously been deemed eternal
truths. The formalized skepticism known as the scientific method has transformed
us and the world we inhabit, replacing a search for truth with useful but ambiguous
layers of approximation. Yet there are things we know for sure, and there are
certainly lies. We can use the light of science to find our way, but must draw on the
best in us to bring meaning to its results.

Magical Thinking

Musician: Mike Finders, singer-songwriter

Host: Mary Roberts

We all hold strong beliefs, stronger than evidence or experience would indicate is
true. As kids we believe in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. As adults, we believe
that we will win the lottery or that our team will win if we wear our lucky shirt to
the game, our team will win. All a form of magical thinking.

But sometimes magical thinking works.

When we tell our personal stories of joy, suffering, laughter and chaos, they reflect
our humanity as shaped and inspired by our physical world, and our imagination.
These stories help us make meaning of our experiences and when we look deeper
and more honestly, they are the stories of our ancestors and for our descendants.
It’s how we remember who we are and where we’re going.

Tonight, six storytellers who will recount personal true tales that reflect the
sacred triumvirate of art, nature, and the human condition. The stories will reflect
a moment in time or a game-changing event that involves conflict, transformation,
and resolution.

In the mid to lat 19th century, French composers brought new sensibilities to music,
including harmonic sensuality, nuanced instrumental colors, and poetic ideas of
form. Debussy forever changed the art of music with his floating harmonies, fleeting
rhythms, and the conviction that pleasure was the guiding principle of composition.

Although she lived to be only 24 years old, the brilliant composer Lili Boulanger,
influenced by Debussy and her mentor Gabriel Fauré, wrote sensitive, lyrical, and
colorful music that reveals the emergence of a distinctive personality. The first woman
to win the Prix de Rome, Boulanger altered French society‘s notions of women in
music.

Added to this colorful, evocative sound world is a new work based on the optical
illusions of MC. Escher by composer Roger Zare.
