Air inlet Temperature = 149 C

Air outlet Temperature = 49 C

Slurry Inlet Temperature = 25 C
Slurry Outlet Temperature = 44 C
Water Content of Slurry = 688.33 Kg/hr
Water in dried PVC = 5.17 Kg/hr
CP of PVC = 0.84 KJ/kg C
Water to be evaporated = 683.16 Kg/hr
Basis : 1 Hour Operation
Heat Input Required by Dryer:
1. For raising temperature of PVC
Q = mλ
Q = 683.16 x 2635.18
λ = 2635.18 (From Heat Transfer By DQ Kern)
Q = 1800249.57 KJ/hr

Total Heat supplied by air:

Q = mCp∆T
m = Q / Cp∆T
m = 1800249.57/0.99 x (149-49)
m = 18184.34 Kg/hr
Density of air at 149C = 0.84 kg/m3
Volumetric flow rate of air = m / D
V. = 307.17 / 0.84
V. = 365.68 m3/min
Since , Diameter of duct is 1 meter
Velocity of air = V. / Area
Since Area = π/4 d2 (For Circle)
V = 365.68/ π/4 x 12
V = 232.8 m/min = 7.76 m/sec
Since 7.76m/sec is for 2 stages for one stage the velocity of air will be
7.76/2 = 3.88 m/sec
Now for heat transfer co-efficient,
Ua =10G0.16/D
Ua = Volumetric heat transfer co-efficient
D = Diameter of Dryer
G = Air mass velocity in m/sec
Density of air at 49 C = 1.042 kg/m3
Air Velocity = 3.88 m/sec
Assume air velocity is taken as 80% of solid velocity
So, Solid Velocity = 3.88/0.8 = 4.85
Difference b/w solid and gas velocity = 4.85 – 3.38 = 0.97m/sec
G=V x ρ
G = 0.97 x 1.042 =1.01074 Kg/s.m2
G = 1.0174 x 60 x 60 = 36833.664 Kg/hr. m2
Ua =10G0.16/D
Ua =10 x 36833.6640.16 /1 = 37.13 KJ/hr.m2.C
For volume of dry air ;

Where ,
Qt =Total heat required
V=Volume of dry air
Tm = (T1 – T2) + (t2 – t1)/2
Tm = (149-49) + (44-25)/2
Tm = 59.5 C
V = Qt/ Ua x Tm
V = 1800242.74/3713 x 59.5
V = 862.11 m3
