1 Sound the general alarm

2 Call Master.

3 Close watertight doors if fitted.

4 After course in order to reduce the effects of flooding.

5 Reduce speed if necessary to reduce the effects of flooding.

6 Exhibit not under command signals if necessary.

7 Fix time and position and enter all occurrences in log.

8 Take soundings of all tanks and bilge's at regular intervals.

10 Identify the locations of incoming water and make attempt to stem the flow
using wood, dunnage, mattress, canvas, etc.. Work can be done out side of the hull,
where possible

11 Calculate rate of flow of water (if possible).

12 Cut off all electrical power running through the area

13 Provide pumps of a capacity significantly exceeding the rate of ingress. Use portable
pumps if available, as well as ship's pumps.

14 Make ship's position available and up dated.

15 Inform local Authorities if there is a risk of damage to ship or oil pollution threat.

16 Broadcast DISTRESS ALERT and message if the ship is in grave and imminent danger
and immediate assistance is required otherwise broadcast as URGENCY message to the

17 If necessary, prepare lifesaving equipment.

18 Based on estimate of water free surface and weight, stability should be calculated.

19 Calculation should include investigation of possible ways to improve the stability.

20 Calculate effects on stress if possible.

21 Extreme care must always be taken when using crane or derrick or transfer of liquids/
ballasting, to prevent worsening of stability.

22 At an early stage it is to be decided, after doing all that can be done to stem the flow,
whether the available pumps can cope with the ingress.

23 If necessary request assistance from other vessels, or salvage.
