Decibel (dB)
Decibel (dB) is a unit to measure the power or the intensity of a signal relative to some given
reference on the logarithmic scale.

2. Decibel-milliwatts (dBm)
Decibel-milliwatts (dBm) is a unit to measure the power or the intensity of a signal relative to
one milliwatt (mW) reference on the logarithmic scale.

3. Watts (W)
Watt is a unit of power and is defined as the rate of consumption of 1J/s. In electrical
engineering, one watt is equal to one volt-ampere.

Relations:

i. Watt-to-dBm
𝑃𝑚𝑊
𝑃𝑑𝐵𝑚 = 10 log( )
1𝑚𝑊
𝑃𝑊
Where 𝑃𝑚𝑊 = is the power in milliwatts. And 𝑃𝑑𝐵𝑚 is the power in dBm.
1000

ii. dBm to dB

𝑃𝑑𝐵 = 𝑃𝑑𝐵𝑚 − 30

iii. Watt to dB
𝑃𝑚𝑊
𝑃𝑑𝐵 = 10 log ( ) − 30
1𝑚𝑊
