The seven major industrial economies (which are, in order of furniture production, the United States, Italy,
Germany, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom and France) together produce 47% in value of the world total. The
furniture production of all developed countries combined covers 62% of the world total.
Furniture production in emerging countries currently amounts to 38% of the world total in value. There are two
countries (China and Poland) where production is increasing rapidly thanks to recent investments in new plants
especially designed and built for exports.
1All data in the report are in current US$. They are affected by exchange rate variations, in particular by the strengthening of the major
currencies against the US$.
World furniture trade basically involves 60 countries, which are the subject of this report and of the World
Furniture Indicators (attached as Part II). The leading importers are the United States, Germany, the United
Kingdom, France and Canada. The major exporters are China, Italy, Germany, Poland and Canada.

In the 1998-2007 period there was a very large increase in the imports of the United States (from US$ 10.3 billion
to US$ 26 billion in current dollars) and of the United Kingdom (from US$ 2.6 billion to US$ 8.3 billion in current
dollars), and smaller increases in France, Germany and Canada.

The most important structural phenomenon of the past decade was the increased degree of openness of the
furniture markets (measured as the ratio between imports and consumption, which for the entire world rose from
21.6% in 1998 to almost 30.6% in 2007). This increase was particularly important in the United States, where the
trade deficit for furniture was US$ 22 billion in 2007, providing the most important stimulus to world furniture
trade.

As a consequence of the opening of the main furniture markets in the last ten years, international trade of
furniture has grown faster than furniture production and faster than international trade of manufactures. In 2008
and 2009 the world GDP will continue to grow at a fast pace and so will international trade of manufactures.
World trade of furniture is expected to grow by 15% in 2008 and by 10% in 2009 in current dollars. World trade of
furniture would then amount to US$ 123 billion in 2008 and US$ 135 billion in 2009 (see Figure 5).

Furniture demand is expected to grow in 2008 and 2009 in all large markets with the exception of the US and
Spain (see below). The list of countries where furniture demand in 2009 should grow more than 3% in real terms
includes six countries among the new EU members (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and
Slovakia), four in Central and Eastern Europe (Croatia, Russia Serbia and Ukraine), eight in Asia (China, Hong
Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam), Argentina and Chile in South America
and six countries in Middle East and Africa (Egypt, Israel, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and South
Africa). Moderate growth is expected in all the rest of the 60 countries except in the US, in Spain and in Latvia
where no real growth is forecasted.

The first step to be taken in order to carry out a systematic study of the data in a world context is to determine the
most important markets. Statistics regarding the gross domestic product and, more generally, the structure of the
economy are available for more than 200 countries (for example in the World Development Indicators of the
World Bank). But many of these economies are of a limited size (small islands, states with low population density
and few inhabitants, developing economies with very low per capita incomes) do not have a modern furniture
industry and do not make a significant contribution to world furniture trade.
Back in the nineties, CSIL chose 50 countries on which to concentrate its work of research, analysis and data
gathering about the furniture industry. Starting with the 2004/2005 edition of this report, the number of countries
increased from fifty to sixty. The decision was due to several new developments. First, the continuing expansion
of the internationalisation process for the furniture industry. Second, the enlargement of the European Union
involving twelve countries of which six (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus, Malta and Bulgaria) were not included
in the sample and have been added, to cover all 27 members of the Union. Third, some more countries have
been added to the sample because of their present or potential importance for furniture production and/or
consumption (Vietnam, Serbia, Ukraine and Lebanon).
The 60 countries had a combined furniture production of about US$ 350 billion in 2007. With 4.8 billion
inhabitants, that is roughly 75% of the world population, they account for 92% of world trade in goods and for
almost all world furniture production in terms of value.
The international furniture trade of this group of 60 countries (which we shall hereafter refer to as the world),
amounted to about US$ 107 billion in 2007. This corresponds to about 1% of world trade of manufactures.

About 50% of exports come from developed countries; however, the share of developed countries decreased by
25 percentage points to the advantage of some emerging countries: from 1998 to 2007 China's share increased
from 5% to 21%. Other major furniture exporting emerging countries are Poland, Vietnam and Malaysia.
If we observe the percentage breakdown by geographic area in 1998 and in 2007, several interesting changes
emerge:
¾ the surge of imports into the United States (which grew by about US$ 16 billion in current dollars between
1998 and 2007) was accompanied by an increase in exports from China, Canada and Vietnam.
In summary, nine countries have been the main protagonists of international furniture trade over the past decade:
the seven major industrial countries plus China and Poland.

The US, Germany, the UK and France have opened rapidly, Spain is opening from a closed market status, while
in Italy the opening process is in its initial stage.
A sizeable percentage of international furniture trade is carried out within the economic regions into which the
world economy can be divided:
¾ in the European Union (15) and Norway and Switzerland about 55% of foreign furniture trade takes place
within the same countries;
¾ in the NAFTA area (US, Canada and Mexico) about 31% of foreign furniture trade is within the three
countries;
¾ in the Asia and Pacific countries more than 39% of total foreign furniture trade is within the region.
On balance, trade within regions amounts to about 46% of total world furniture trade.
Therefore, only one half of world furniture trade can be considered "global" in the sense that it takes place
between countries in geographically distant regions. The most important of these flows are:
¾ from the emerging countries of Asia to the United States (66% of outgoing flows from this area) and to
Europe;
¾ Large producers for internal consumption, with high per capita income, high labour costs and a structurally
negative balance of trade: the United States, Germany, Japan, France and the United Kingdom.
These countries together account for 46% of world consumption of furniture.
The furniture trade deficit of this group of countries is rising fast, mainly because of the United States, where
the deficit increased from US$ 7.8 billion in 1998 to US$ 22.4 billion in 2007.
¾ Large producers for both internal consumption and exports. Despite high per capita incomes and high
labour costs, they have some specific comparative advantages: Canada and Scandinavia have ample
forestry resources; Italy benefits from the peculiar organisation into productive districts with many small
companies.
The exports/production ratio for these countries together is about 47%: Canada exports 35% of production
(mainly to the United States), Italy 45% and Scandinavian countries an average of 69%.
Italy has a surplus in the balance of furniture trade amounting to US$ 10 billion.
¾ Large emerging producers dedicated to exports, thanks to the low cost of labour: countries in Asia (China,
Malaysia and Vietnam), some of the new EU members (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia) and Latin
America (Mexico, Brazil). All these countries have a furniture trade surplus and a very high propensity for
furniture exports: Poland, Vietnam and Malaysia export about three quarters of their production, and China
increased its degree of openness to the international market (in terms of exports over production ratios)
from 23% in 1998 to 31% in 2007.

Appendix
3. Figures in italics indicate data that are for years other than those specified.
5. Population and GNP data for all countries except Taiwan are either from the World Development
Indicators, World Bank, or from the World Economic Outlook Database, IMF. Data for Taiwan are from the
Directorate-General of Budget, Taiwan.
6. Eurostat data were converted to US$ using exchange rates from the US Federal Reserve.
7. Furniture trade data were processed by CSIL mainly on the basis of UN and Eurostat data. Other sources
include: US Census Bureau, Industry Canada, Bancomext (Mexico), Ministry of Finance (Japan), Board of
Foreign Trade (Taiwan), Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Malaysia), Thai Customs
Department (Thailand).
8. Furniture trade data for all countries except members of the European Union refer either to headings
94.01 and 94.03 of the Harmonized System, excluding seats of a kind used for aircraft and seats of a kind
used for motor vehicles, or to code 821 of SITC Rev. 3, excluding seats of a kind used for aircraft, seats of
a kind used for motor vehicles, mattresses supports, mattresses and similar furnishing.
9. Furniture trade data for European countries are from Eurostat and refer to the following codes of the
Combined Nomenclature: 94.01 and 94.03, excluding seats of a kind used for aircraft and seats of a kind
used for motor vehicles.
10. Discrepancies in data presented in different editions of the World Furniture Indicators reflect updates by
statistical offices, revisions to historical series and changes in methodology. Readers are advised not to
compare data series between different editions of the Indicators. This refers to several European
countries, for which CSIL revised the entire series of furniture data. The change was due to the fact that
more detailed and more standardized statistics for the European countries are now available.
11. Data for China do not include data for Hong Kong (listed separately). Trade data for China should be used
with caution because of discrepancies between Chinese statistics on exports to the US and US statistics
on imports from China. Much of the discrepancy stems from transshipments through Hong Kong which are
classified differently by different countries. The US attributes to China all imports which are shipped
through Hong Kong while China treats this trade as exports to Hong Kong (the last known destination).
Markups in price during transshipment (difficult to estimate, amounting probably to about 30% of value)
result in additional differences. Discrepancies also exist in treatment of insurance and freight. Finally there
are differences due to unrecorded shipments, under-invoicing and misdeclaration of products.
12. Regarding furniture trade data, there are often discrepancies between the import data recorded by the
importing countries and the export data of the relevant exporting countries. This is due to a variety of
causes: different treatment of insurance and freight, unrecorded shipments, under-invoicing, fraudulent
declarations and time gaps in recording at the end of the year (for example, trade recorded as exports in
December and imports in the following January).
13. The 60 countries covered by the World Furniture Indicators were selected by CSIL on the basis of size of
the economy, importance of the furniture sector and contribution to world furniture trade. The geographical
classification of the 60 countries is as follows:
European Union (27) + Norway and Switzerland: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France,
Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom (i.e. the EU
15 less Luxembourg for which furniture data are listed together with those of Belgium), Bulgaria,
Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia,
Slovenia (i.e. the 12 new members of the European Union), plus Norway and Switzerland (28
countries).
Central and Eastern Europe outside the EU & Russia: Croatia, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine
(5 countries).
Asia and Pacific : China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore,
South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand (14 countries).
