Electrical and Electronics Engineering Syllabus

PART –A (Common for all candidates)


UNIT-I:
EM THEORY:
Electric and magnetic fields, Coloumb’s law, Biot-Savart’s law, Gauss’s Law and Ampere’s
Law. Fields in dielectrics, conductors and magnetic materials. Maxwell’s equations. Time
varying fields, Plane-wave propagation in dielectric and conducting media, Poynting
theorem.

UNIT-II:
ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS:
Circuit elements, Kirchoff’s Laws, Mesh and Nodal analysis, Network Theorems and
applications. Transient analysis and steady state analysis for arbitrary inputs. Properties of
networks in terms of poles and zeros, Transfer function, Resonant circuits. Three phase
circuits. Two-port networks, Elements of Two-element network synthesis, Three phase
circuits, measurement of power by two watt meter method. (AC &DC Excitation), Magnetic
Circuits, Co efficient of coupling, Dot convention.

UNIT-III:
CONTROL SYSTEMS:
Mathematical modelling of physical systems, transfer function, Block diagrams and signal
flow graphs and their reduction. Time domain and frequency domain analysis of linear
dynamic system. Steady state errors for different type of inputs and stability criteria for
feedback systems. Stability analysis using Routh-Hurwitz array, Nyquist plot and Bode plot.
Root locus and the estimation of gain and phase margin. Basic concepts of compensator
design. State variable matrix and its use in system modelling and design. Elements of non-
linear control analysis. Control system components, electromechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic
components.

UNIT-IV:
ELECTRICAL MACHINES AND POWER TRANSFORMERS:
Power transformers - Construction and testing. Equivalent circuits. Losses and efficiency.
Regulation. Auto-transformer, 3-phase transformer. Parallel operation.
D.C. Machines: Construction, excitation methods. Armature reaction and commutation.
Characteristics and performance analysis. Generators and motors. Starting and speed control.
Testing, Losses and efficiency.

Induction machines: Construction. Principles of operation. Rotating magnetic fields.


Characteristics and performance analysis. Determination of circuit model. Circle diagram.
Starting and speed control of three phase induction motors. Single-phase synchronous and
induction motors.
Synchronous machines: Construction. Operating characteristics and performance analysis.
Synchronous reactance. Efficiency. Voltage regulation. Salient-pole machine, parallel
operation. Hunting. Short circuit transients.
UNIT-V:
ANALOG AND DIGITAL ELECTRONICS AND CIRCUITS:
Semiconductor device physics, PN Junctions and transistors, circuit models and parameters.
FET, Zener, tunnel, Schottky, photo diodes and their applications, rectifier circuits, voltage
regulators and multipliers, switching behaviour of diodes and transistors.
Small signal amplifiers, biasing circuits, frequency response and improvement, multistage
amplifiers and feed-back amplifiers, D.C amplifiers, Oscillators. Large Signal amplifiers,
coupling methods, push pull amplifiers operational amplifiers, wave shaping circuits.
Multivibrators and flip-flops and their applications. Digital logic gate families, universal
gates-combination circuits for arithmetic and logic operational, sequential logic circuits.
Counters, registers, RAM and ROMs.

PART – B
(SYLLABUS FOR POWER SYSTEMS SPECIALIZATION)

UNIT-I:
POWER SYSTEM STABILITY:
Power System Stability: Steady State Stability and Transient Stability, Steady state stability
of a synchronous machine connected to infinite bus, calculation of steady state stability limit,
synchronous machine models with and without saliency, Equal area criterion, Application of
equal area criterion, Swing equation, Step by step solution of Swing equation, factors
effecting transient stability, auto Reclosures, mathematical formulation of voltage stability
problem.

UNIT-II:
POWER SYSTEM OPERATION AND CONTROL:
Economic Operation of Power System: Input output curves, Heat rates and incremental cost
curves, Equal incremental cost criterion and economic operation neglecting transmission
losses. Transmission loss coefficients, Economic operation including transmission losses.
Load Frequency Control: Governor Characteristics, Regulation of two generators in parallel,
concept of control area, incremental power balance of a control area, single area control. Flat
frequency control, Flat tie line frequency control, Tie line bias control. Automatic Voltage
Regulator. Power factor control and voltage control: Causes and disadvantages of low power
factor, methods of power factor improvement.

UNIT-III:
COMPUTER METHODS IN POWER SYSTEMS:
Load flow studies: Formation of Y bus for a system, modeling of tap changing and phase
shifting transformer, formulation of load flow problem, Solution of load flow by Gauss-
Seidel, Newton-Raphson, Decoupled and fast Decoupled methods, comparison of different
load flow methods. Z-bus formation - Symmetrical Three phase Transients in R-L series
circuits – short circuit currents – Reactances of Synchronous Machines – Symmetrical Fault
calculations. Short circuit capacity of a bus.

UNIT-IV:
POWER SYSTEM PROTECTION:
Backup protection, Zones of protection, Operating principles and construction of
electromagnetic and induction relays, Over current, Over voltage and power relays, , Circuit
breakers, Auto reclosure, Types of circuit breakers. Need for protection – primary protection
– backup protection – zones of protection. Classification of relays and their operating
principles. Transformer and generator protection. Circuit breakers and need for circuit
breakers. Circuit breaker types and their principle of operation. Over voltage protection:
Protection of transmission lines against direct lightening strokes, Insulation co-ordination.
UNIT-V:
POWER SYSTEM ANALYSIS:
Unsymmetrical faults : Symmetrical components of unsymmetrical phasors – Power in terms
of symmetrical components - sequence impedance and sequence networks. Sequence
networks of unloaded generators – Sequence impedances of circuit elements – Single line to
ground, line-to-line and double line to ground faults on unloaded generator – Unsymmetrical
faults of power systems. Transients in power systems : Causes of over voltages : Traveling
Wave Theory – Wave equation – Open Circuited Line – The short circuited line – Junction of
lines of different natural impedances – Reflection and refraction – Coefficients – Junction of
Cable and overhead lines – Junction of three lines of different natural impedances – Bewley
Lattice diagram.

PART-B
(SYLLABUS FOR POWER ELECTRONICS SPECIALIZATION)

UNIT-I:
POWER SEMI CONDUCTOR DEVICES:
Power Diode, Thyristors–Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCR’s) – BJT – Power MOSFET –
Power IGBT and their characteristics – Basic theory of operation of SCR, SPICE model of
SCR – Static characteristics – Turn-on and Turn-off methods- Dynamic characteristics of
SCR – Turn on and Turn off times -Salient points. Two transistor analogy of SCR – R, RC,
UJT firing circuits – Series and parallel connections of SCRs – Snubber circuit details –
Specifications and Ratings of SCR, BJT, IGBT – Numerical problems – Line Commutation
and Forced Commutation circuits.

UNIT-II:
AC TO DC CONVERTERS:
Phase control technique – Single phase Line commutated converters – Half wave controlled
converters with Resistive, RL load and RLE load – Wave Forms, Derivation of average load
voltage and current -Active and Reactive power inputs to the converters without and with
Freewheeling Diode – Numerical problems Single Phase Fully Controlled Converters: Fully
controlled converters, Midpoint and Bridge connections with Resistive, RL loads and RLE
load – Wave Forms, Derivation of average load voltage and current – Line commutated
inverters, semi-converters, active and Reactive power inputs to the converters, Effect of
source inductance – Expressions of load voltage and current – Numerical problems. Three
Phase Line Commutated Converters: Three phase converters – Three pulse and six pulse
converters and bridge connections with R, RL load voltage and current with R and RL load
and RLE loads – Semi Converters, Effect of Source inductance–Dual converters Waveforms
– Numerical Problems dual converters and forced commutation schemes to improve power
factor of converters

UNIT-III:
AC to AC and DC TO DC CONVERTERS:
AC voltage controllers – Single phase two SCR’s in anti parallel with R and RL loads ,
modes of operation of Triac – Triac with R and RL loads – Derivation of RMS load voltage,
current and power factor- wave forms , Numerical problems- Single phase and three phase
cycloconverters with R and RL loads. Principle of operation of buck, boost, buck-boost, Cuk,
fly back, forward, push-pull, half bridge, full bridge Converters with continuous and
discontinuous operation, Input & output filter design, multi-output boost converters, diode
rectifier based boost converters.
UNIT-IV:
DC-AC CONVERTERS:

Inverters – Single phase inverter – Basic series inverter, parallel


inverter, bridge inverter – Waveforms, Simple bridge inverters, Output voltage control and
Harmonic Neutralization - Analysis of single pulse, multiple pulse, and Sinusoidal PWM
techniques. Harmonic Reduction using multiple commutation Pulse-width modulation
methods for voltage control and power factor improvement– Numerical problems. Multilevel
inverters: Diode clamped, capacitor clamped and H-bridge.

UNIT-V:
POWER ELECTRONIC CONTROL OF ELECTRIC DRIVES:

Principle of phase control – Fundamental relations, analysis of series and separately excited
DC motor with single-phase, three-phase Converters – waveforms, performance parameters,
performance characteristics Static speed control of induction motor: the AC power controller,
slip energy recovery, VSI and CSI controlled induction motor.

PART - C
(SYLLABUS FOR CONTROL SYSTEMS SPECIALIZATION)
UNIT-I:
Advanced Control Systems: Stability Analysis in Frequency Domain: Lag, Lead, Lead-Lag
Controllers design in frequency domain, Lyapunov’s theorems. Direct method of Lypanov,
Method of Isoclines for Constructing Trajectories, singular points, phase-plane analysis of
nonlinear control systems, nonlinear systems, nonlinearities, describing functions, describing
function analysis of nonlinear control systems, Concepts of state, state variables and state
model, Solving Time invariant state Equations- State Transition Matrix Controllability and
observability.

UNIT-II:
Programmable Logic Controllers: Ladder Diagram programming using contacts and coils.
Digital logic gates programming in the Boolean algebra system, Ladder diagrams for process
control, sequence listing, construction and flow charts, input, output, holding registers,
industrial timers and counter applications, number comparison functions and conversion
functions, SKIP, Master control Relay, Jump, Move, FIFO, FAL, ONS, CLR and Sweep
functions and their applications. Sequence functions and applications, controlling of two axes
and three axis Robots with PLC, Matrix functions, Analog input and output modules and
applications, position control with PID, PID modules and tuning.
UNIT-III:
Digital Control Systems: Signal processing, Sample and hold devices, Sampling theorem,
zero order hold, Z–Transforms, Inverse z–transforms, Solution of difference equations, Pulse
transfer functions, open loop and closed loop responses, State Space Representation of
discrete time systems, State transition matrix and methods of evaluation – Discretization of
continuous Time state equations – Stability analysis : Mapping S–Plane to Z–Plane, Primary
strips and Complementary Strips, Stability criterion , Modified Routh’s stability criterion and
Jury’s stability test, Design of discrete time control systems using frequency response in w–
plane for lag and led compensators – Root locus technique in the z– plane, Design of state
feedback controller through pole placement – Necessary and sufficient conditions –
Ackerman’s formula.
UNIT-IV:
Industrial Instrumentation: Thermocouple, Resistance Temperature Detector & Thermistor
circuits, Radiation pyrometers and thermal imaging. Mechanical, Electro-mechanical and
electronic pressure measuring instruments. Transmitter types, Level measurement:
Differential pressure level detectors, Capacitance level sensor, Ultrasonic level detectors and
Radar level transmitters and gauges, differential pressure and variable area flow meters,
Positive displacement flow meters, Electro Magnetic flow meters, Hot wire anemometer,
laser Doppler anemometer, ultrasonic, vortex and cross correlation flow meters, and
measurement of mass flow rate.

UNIT-V:
Sensors and Transducers: Resistive transducers: Potentiometers, metal and semiconductor
strain gauges, signal conditioning circuits and applications: Load and torque measurement,
Digital displacement sensors, Self and mutual inductive transducers- capacitive transducers,
eddy current transducers, proximity sensors, tacho-generators, Piezoelectric transducers,
Seismic transducer photoelectric transducers, Hall effect sensors, magnetostrictive
transducers. semiconductor sensors. Smart sensors.
