Universal  Design  for  Learning  (UDL)
This  lesson  supports  UDL  by:
•   Aiding  those  students  who  need  additional  help  with  both  visuals  and  audio.
•   Allow  students  who  struggle  with  writing  with  a  pen  or  a  pencil  by  allowing  them  to  use  the  keyboard
or  big  keys  if  they  need.
•   Allowing  students  to  have  the  creative  choice  in  how  they  make  this  video.  It  differs  from  the  traditional
pen  and  paper  types  of  assessments.
Lesson  idea  implementation:
The  teacher  will  take  two  weeks  to  discuss  the  7  of  the  key  people  in  history  during  the  time  period  of  1950-‐
1975.  The  teacher  will  create  an  anchor  chart  for  each  of  the  people  and  have  the  students  copy  the  anchor
charts  into  their  social  studies  journals.  The  teacher  will  then  hang  each  of  the  anchor  charts  around  the
classroom  for  the  students  to  look  at  whenever  they  need.

At  the  end  of  the  two  weeks  the  teacher  will  need  to  assess  the  students  and  what  they  have  learned.  The
teacher  will  walk  around  the  room  with  a  hat  that  continues  pieces  of  paper.  On  these  slips  of  paper  will  be
the  names  of  the  people  that  they  have  been  studying.  For  example,  some  may  say  Martin  Luther  King  Jr.,
Rosa  Parks,  Lucille  Ball,  Dwight  D.  Eisenhower,  or  etc.  The  students  will  draw  a  paper  slip  out  of  the  hat  and
whatever  name  that  they  pull  is  who  they  have.

Once  the  students  have  gotten  their  historical  figures  they  will  be  responsible  for  creating  an  iMovie.  The
students  will  get  two  full  days  during  what  would  be  their  regularly  scheduled  social  studies  time  to  create
this.  The  students  should  include  important  facts,  pictures,  other  artifacts  (short  video  clips)  into  this  iMovie.
During  this  time,  the  teacher  should  be  walking  around  the  computer  lab  helping  out  the  students  with  the
creation  and  compilation  of  their  iMovie.  After  all  of  the  students  have  created  and  finished  their  movies,
they  will  be  able  to  present  their  final  creations  in  front  of  their  classmates.

Importance  of  technology:
I  think  that  using  iMovie  is  important  aspect  to  this  project  because  it  allows  the  students  to  have  a  break
from  the  traditional  forms  of  assessments  that  they  are  used  to.  This  way,  the  students  are  able  to  be  creative
in  the  formation  of  their  iMovie.  By  having  the  students  research  and  create  something  about  these  historical
figures  they  are  making  a  deeper  and  more  meaningful  connection  to  the  people.  I  think  that  by  adding
technology  to  this  lesson  plan  the  students  are  more  eager  to  learn  and  have  much  more  fun.

Internet  Safety  and  Student  Privacy:
To  protect  the  students  and  their  privacy  I  would  ensure  that  they  are  using  kid  safe  and  educationally  sound
websites  only.  In  order  to  do  this,  I  would  have  a  set  of  websites  that  they  are  only  allowed  to  use  when
researching  their  historical  figure.  Before  starting  this  assignment,  I  would  send  home  a  permission  slip  for
the  parents/guardians  to  read  over  and  sign.
Reflective  Practice:
I  feel  like  this  lesson  idea  positively  impacts  student  learning.  By  allowing  the  student  to  use  technology,  they
are  more  eager  to  learn.  When  they  are  more  eager  to  learn,  they  begin  to  think  more  critically  which  allows
them  to  think  on  a  higher  Loti  level.  To  further  extend  this  lesson,  I  could  have  the  students  create  bottle
people.  This  is  where  the  students  take  a  water  bottle  and  create  their  historical  figure  using  various  art
supplies.  They  can  then  write  a  narrative  as  if  they  were  the  person  and  then  share  their  stories  and  their
bottle  people.
