The Legend of Surabaya
Once upon a time in the Java Sea, there lived two beasts were equally strong and arrogant. Both
of these animals were a shark and a crocodile. Because they livee side by side, between the
shark and the crocodile often had a fight for foods. Because they were equally strong, agile, and
fierce, the fight continued for such a long time. There was no winner or loser, the fight always
ended with draw. However, after countless fight they began to feel bored and tired. Realizing
that the fight only caused injury, they made an agreement to divide the territory into two areas.

"Hi Crocs, I am tired fighting you,” The shark said.

"Well, me too, Shark. Then, what should we do to stop this fighting?" Crocodile asked.

"To prevent more fights between us, let’s divided this territory into two areas, the land belongs
to you, the sea belongs to mine. I will hunt my prey only on the sea. You also do the same. We
cannot enter the other territory. Then, as a limit, we first determine that the ground water that
can be achieved when the tidal sea! " The shark proposed.

"Mmm, okay. That is great idea. I agree." Crocodile said.

With this agreement, for a while sharks and crocodiles never had fight anymore. Both agreed to
respect each other territory. However, after several years, the shark’s main prey, the fish, were
running out in the sea. They feared of the shark and most of them ran to the Brantas River.
Realizing that, the shark secretly started looking for prey in the mouth of the Brantas River.
Shark did not want the crocodile knew about this. If the crocodile knew, the agreement that
they had made would be ruined. However, after several time the shark secretly entered the
crocodile’s territory, the crocodile began to know it.

“Shark, how dare you come to my territory? This mouth of the Brantas River is mine. You do not
have any authority to come here. You break the agreement that we have both agreed.” Shout
the crocodile.

“What? Your territory? Excuse me, Mr. Crocodile. This mouth Brantas River is my territory. It is
part of the sea. I do not break the agreement. But, you do. You enter my territory.” Replied the
shark.

“I am not dumb, shark. River is part of the land. Your territory is in the sea. It means that the
river is my territory.” Said the crocodile.

“Do you see this, dumb crocodile? The river is full of water so as the sea. It means this river is
part of the sea. And it is also my territory.” Said the shark.
“Do not mess with me, Shark. You know what I capable of,” the crocodile threaten.

"So you want a fight. Well, come on then. I will protect what is mine. And this time I will win."
The Shark replied.

The quarrels between the shark and the crocodile ended with a fierce fight. The fight this time
was bigger the other fights that they had done. They both had still equal power. They bit, they
hit, and they kicked each other. And in an instant, the river was turned to red because of their
blood. They both were heavily wounded. The shark tail almost broke off, so as the crocodile’ tail.
After few hours fighting, they stopped. The shark surrendered and returned to the sea. The
crocodile stood still and felt satisfied because he could defend his territory. However, not long
after that, they both died. They died because of severe injuries from former fight. And to
remember the fight between the shark and the crocodile, the place where the great fight
happened was named “Surabaya”. Surabaya was taken from word “Sura” means a shark, and
“Baya” which means a crocodile.

Legenda Asal Usul Nama Surabaya

Dahulu kala di di Laut Jawa, hiduplah 2 hewan buas yang sama-sama kuat dan angkuh. Kedua
hewan tersebut adalah ikan hiu dan seekor buaya. Karena tinggal berdampingan, antara hiu dan
buaya sering terjadi pertarungan dalam memperebutkan makanan. Karena sama-sama kuat,
tangkas, dan ganas, perkelahianpun terus berlajut untuk waktu yang lama. Tidak ada yang
menang atau kalah, pertarungan mereka selalu berakhir imbang. Akan tetapi, setelah

pertarungan yang begitu lama, mereka mulai merasa bosan dan lelah. Menyadari bahwa
pertarungan hanya membuat mereka terluka, mereka membuat suatu perjanjian untuk
membagi wilayah mereka menjadi dua bagian.

“Hi buaya, saya lelah bertarung dengan mu,” kata hiu.

“Saya juga, hiu. Terus, apa yang harus kita lakukan untuk menghentikan pertaruangan ini?”
Tanya buaya.
“Untuk menghindari pertarungan antara kita, mari bagi wialayah ini menjadi dua bagian,
wilayah tanah menajdi milik mu, sedangkan wilayah laut menjadi milik ku. Saya akan berburu
buruan ku hanya di laut. Kamu juga melakukan hal yang sama. Kita tidak boleh memasuki
wilayah yang lain. Kemudian, sebagai batasnya, kita tentukan lebih dulu yaitu tanah yang dapat
dicapai air laut pada saat pasang surut!"

“Mmm, baik lah. Itu merupakan ide yang bagus. Saya setuju.” Kata buaya.

Dengan persetujuan ini, untuk sementara waktu antara hiu dan buaya tidak pernah berkelahi
lagi. Keduanya telah setuju untuk menghargai wilayah kekuasaan masing-masing. Akan tetapi,
setelah beberapa tahun, ikan sebagai buruan utama hiu berangsur habis di lautan. Mereka takut
akan hiu dan sebagian besar dari mereka lari ke muara Sungai Brantas. Menyadari hal tersebut,
hiu secara diam-diam mencari buruanya di muara Sungai Brantas. Hiu tidak ingin buaya tahu
tentang hal tersebut. Jika buaya tahu, persetujuan yang telah mereka sepakati akan hancur.
Namun, setelah beberapa kali hiu diam-diam masuk ke wialayah buaya, buaya mulai
mengetahuinya.

“Hiu, beraninya kamu memasuki wilayah ku? Muara Sungai Brantas ini adalah miliku. Kamu
tidak punya hak untuk datang ke sini. Kamu melanggar perjanjian yang telah kita sepakati.”
Teriak buaya.

“Apa? Wilayah mu? Permisi tuan buaya. Muara Sungai Brantas ini adalah wilayah saya. Ini
adalah bagian dari laut. Saya tidak melanggar peraturan yang kita buat. Tapi, kamu yang
melanggar. Kamu masuk ke wilayah saya ini.” Jawab hiu.

“Saya tidak bodoh, hiu. Sungai adalah bagian dari daratan. Wilayah kamu itu di luat. Itu berarti
sungai ini adalah wilayah saya.” Kata buaya.

“Apa kamu lihat ini, buaya bodoh? Sungai ini penuh dengan water, seperti halnya juga laut. Itu
berarti sungai ini juga bagian dari laut. Dan ini juga bagian dari wilayah ku.” Kata hiu

“Jangan mencari gara-gara dengan saya, hiu. Kamu tahu apa yang saya bisa lakukan,” buaya
mengancam.

“Jadi kamu ingin bertarung. Baik lah, ayo. Saya akan melindungi apa yang menjadi milik saya.
Dan kali ini saya akan menang.” Jawab hiu.

Adu mulut antara hiu dan buaya tersebut berakhir dengan pertarungan yang sengit.
Pertarungan kali ini lebih besar dari pertarungan-pertarungan yang telah mereka lakukan.
Mereka berdua masih memiliki kekuatan yang imbang. Mereka menggigit, memukul, dan
menendang satu sama lain. Dan dengan singkat, sungai berubah menjadi merah karena darah
mereka. Mereka beruda sama-sama mengalami luka yang sangat parah. Ekor hiu hampir putus,
ekor buaya juga sama. Setelah beberapa jam pertarungan, mereka berhenti. Hiu menyerah dan
kembali ke laut. Sedangkan buaya tetap berdiri dan merasa puas karena dia berhasil
mempertahankan wilayahnya. Akan tetapi, tidak lama setelah itu, mereka berdua mati. Mereka
mati karena menderita luka yang sangat serius dari pertarungan tadi. Dan untuk mengingat
pertarungan antara hiu dan buaya tersebut, tempat dimana pertarungan besar tersebut terjadi
dinamai “Surabaya”. Surabaya diambil dari kata “Sura” yang berarti hiu, dan “Baya” yang berarti
buaya.
