Physics 121 Hour Exam #1: Summer 2010

Monday, June 7th, 2010

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Carefully read all 4 problems and solve all of them.

2. It is your responsibility to print your name on ALL pages of this exam. For grading,
the exam will be separated & pages could get mixed up if your name is not clearly
printed at the top of all pages.

3. Answers to each problem should be written on the specific sheet that contains the
question. Use both sides of the same sheet for your answers.

4. Show all your work and reasoning to receive full credit. Be sure your work is clearly
shown, and your answers are circled with appropriate units. Don’t make the grader
guess what you are trying to convey.

5. Cross out all unwanted work, as incorrect statements may cost you points.

6. This examination is to be taken without the aid of notes, textbook, electronic device
(save non-alpha numeric calculators), or any other individual. Any violations of this
condition will be referred to the Academic Honesty Committee, and this particular exam
will earn no credit without the option for grade replacement.

7. If a problem has multiple parts, and a latter part requires an answer from an earlier
part for which you could not solve, state an assumed answer for the earlier part, and use
it in the latter part.

8. You may use one side of a hand written 3x5 note card for pertinent information. This
note care may NOT contain solved examples problems.

1. A mother eagle is training her baby eaglet to fly. She drops the eaglet from the
30.0 m high nest, and when the eaglet has fallen 14.5m, she herself drops from the
nest to catch the eaglet 1m from the ground.
a) Determine the velocity of the eaglet when it’s fallen 14.50m.
b) Determine the time it takes the eaglet to fall the additional 14.50 m at which point it
will be exactly 1m from the ground.
c) Determine the mother eagle’s acceleration that she must have to catch the eaglet
1m from the ground, as described in the problem above.

a ) V 2 = 0 2 − 2(9.8)(−14.5) so V = 284.2 = 16.858 = −16.86m / s ( Downward )

b) ∆y = −14.5 = −16.86(t ) − 4.9(t 2 )

so 4.9t 2 + 16.86t − 14.5 = 0 use quadratic eqn

− 16.86 ± 16.86 2 − 4(4.9)(−14.5)

= t = 0.712 = 0.71 s (via the positive root )
2( 4. 9)

c) Mother has 0.71s to get to the eaglet and must travel - 29m to intercept
by 1m off the ground
1
∆y = −29m = 0 − (a )(0.712 ) so a = 115.06 = 115ms −2 , down

2. A marksman fires an arrow at a target 100.m away. The arrow is fired horizontally
& is level with the target upon firing.
a) Determine the initial speed of the arrow such that it lands 8.00m below the target.
b) Determine the final VELOCITY of the arrow at the moment of impact.
c) At what angle above the horizontal should the marksman fire, to hit the target,
assuming no change in the initial speed of the arrow?

Target
a) Intial velocity is striclty in the x direction
∆x = 100 = V0t = * Get t
∆y = −8.00m = 0 − 4.9t 2 so t = 1.2777 = 1.28s plug into *
* = 100 = V0 (1.2777) so V0 = 78.26 = 78.3m / s

b) The initial velocity in the x - direction of 78.3 m/s never changes

Determine the final y - velocity and add it to the x - velocity as a vector
Vy = 0 - 9.8(1.2777) = −12.5 ms -1 Vx = 78.3ms −1
− 12.5
so V = 78.32 + (−12.5) 2 = 79.3ms −1 θ = tan −1 ( ) = −9.07 0 or − 9.10
78.3
r
V = 79.3ms −1 , − 9.10

c) ∆y = 0 = 78.3 sin(θ )t − 4.9t 2 Get t first and plug in for x eqn

78.3 sin θ
t=
4 .9
78.3 sin θ
∆x = 100 = 78.3 cos(θ )t = 78.3 cosθ ( )
4 .9
100 1
= 0.0799 = cosθ sin θ = sin 2θ
1251.2 2

9.198 = 2θ so θ = 4.5980 = 4.60

3. Two boxes, m1=3.00kg and m2 = 6.00kg have coefficients of kinetic friction 0.300, /25
and 0.400 respectively when placed on an incline at θ=300 (figure-a).
(a) What acceleration does each block experience?
(b) If a taut string is connected to the boxes as in figure-b, with m1 lower on the slope,
determine the acceleration of each box. 2

Figure-a Figure-b
(c) If m1 was moving around a banked curve made of the same material as the incline
above, determine the angle of banking such that friction is not required for uniform
circular motion when the centripetal acceleration is 17.83 ms-2.
a) Sum forces parallel to the incline & perpendicular on m in general
∑ F =mg sin θ − F
// = ma Since F = µ F get F
fr kinetic fr k N N

∑ F = F − mg cos θ = 0 so F = mg cos θ
⊥ N N

so ∑ F becomes mg sin θ − µ mg cos θ = ma m drops out

// k

9.8sin(30) - µ k (9.8 cos(30)) = a = 4.9 − µ k (8.487)

Plug in respective values for µ k 1 and µ k 2 to get
a1 = 2.35ms −2 down incline a2 = 1.50ms −2 DOWN INCLINE

b) Here m1 & m2 move as a pair and share the same acceleration

∑F // m1 =m1 g sin θ − µ1m1 g cos θ − T = m1a
∑F // m 2 =m2 g sin θ − µ 2 m2 g cos θ + T = m2 a Add 2 eqns to eliminate T
(m1 + m2 ) g sin θ − g cos θ ( µ1m1 + µ 2 m2 ) = a (m1 + m2 )
All is known except " a" so plug in in we get :
a = 1.79ms −2 down the incline

c)Since the acceleration is now inward, sum forces in X &Y directions

mg
∑ Fx = FN sin θ = m1aR Get FN : ∑ F y = FN cos θ − mg = 0 so FN = cos θ
mg
∑F x =
cos θ
sin θ = m1 g tan θ = m1a R All is known but θ so solve

θ = 61.2 0
