ABSTRACT
This research work was carried out to examine the Advantage of On-time

Attendance Log System on Students Academic Performance in Philippine

Christian University S.Y. 2018-2019. Moreover, Different sources, common types

and possible ways to give advantage to the student's will also be discussed. This

quantitative research is supported by statistical tools where in the primary sources

of data collected via questionnaire was collected. Lastly, the claimed hypothesis

of the researchers will be tested and it will be distinguish whether it will be accepted

or not.

Our research is about the students attendance for us to monitor if they are

attending their class or not and to know if they arrived on school hours. This

research will be proposed in Philippine Christian University to help the school in

monitoring the in and out in the students in the campus. Our research will also help

the school in monitoring not only the students in and out but also the staffs and the

teachers.

The System will know if the students are arrived in school and if they are

taking cutting class so for us to know their activities in school. If they arrived in

school are system will send a text message to parents of the students. The system

will also detect if they are cutting class because if they are leaving the room they

need to tap the card so this way we can know it.

This research have many advantages like it will lessen the problem of the

parents if their children arrived in school or not. This research will also lessen the

teacher’s or the student’s responsibilities and also this will also lessen the parents

and the teacher’s problem in terms of giving grades in their student based on their

attendance.

To know if the students activities and to know if they are safe arrived in

School premises with in school days. The advantage of this if know the students

cutting we can contact their parents to notice them about their children. Also the

purpose of it to less and time and effort of the teacher to check attendance of the

students.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUUCTION

Background of the Study

Based on findings in Merriam Webster (Android Application) Attendance on

how often a person goes to classes, meetings, etc. Checking the Attendance is

very important for us to know the total number of people that are present during in

an Event, Meetings, and any Occasion. Nowadays, many Students are using

Technology. Many of them are always playing Online Games like LOL, ROS,

DOTA 2, and CF and because of that students are cut their Classes to play these

Games in the Internet Cafe this is the reason why it affect their school attendance,

because of this many of them got a failing grade for being absent during School

hours.

Teachers are the one who is most responsible for their students especially

if they had advisory classes in the school so they are the one who need to guide

their students to get higher grades. The Importance of attendance is to know the

students attendance in a good and easy way so that if there are problems we can

easily solve it.

Attendance has its many uses especially in school because it is their basis

in order to check if their students are active or not. Teachers will lessen their time

1
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

to check their class’s attendance because they can get a copy of the attendance

in the School IT Department or they can log in their account to check their student

attendance in the system by searching the Students Name or LRN (Learner’s

Reference Number). By using of this they will tap it in the machine and it’s all done

because the system will save the date and time of their log in and log out in the

school.

The Students don't need to worry about their attendance because some of

them forgot to sign the attendance in each day because of many school activities,

Assignment, Project any many more. This system will be mandatory to tap their ID

so for them to enter the school so they never forgot to log in and log out.

This System will be a big help to the parents of students of PCU because

they will get an SMS message from the school containing the information of their

Son/Daughter arrived time in school and departure time of the students in the

school so for them to know that their Son/Daughter arrived safely in the school.

School authority will assure that the students are always attending the school so

they will know that their No students are in Danger outside of the school especially

the students that are taking cutting classes.

This System will also can be used the student because they can Log In their

account for them to see the History of their attendance in school.

Statement of the Purpose

These are the following problems that will be solved in this research:

1. What are the advantages of this On-Time Attendance Log System in the

school?

2. Why do we need this On-Time Attendance Log System?

3. How can this On-Time Attendance Log System affect the students?

4. Why does school need this On-Time Attendance Log System?

5. Who will benefit this On-Time Attendance Log System?

6. How it can save teachers time and effort?

7. What will happen to the students if we have this On-Time Attendance Log

System?

Scope and Limitations

This study is conducted and will primarily focus on the selected Grade 12

Tech Voc Computer Programming students in Philippine Christian University,

Dasmariñas Campus. It has a purpose of assuring the presence of every student

in the campus every time they go to school.

The information will be limitedly gathered from the sample size of 67

students (33.5%) of the population in selected Grade 12 Tech Voc Computer

Programming of the students of the said university. The researchers will be after

the results of the students who are entering the campus all throughout the

weekdays like they are supposed to tap their ID in the Machine Scanner that will

be place at the gate to monitor who are entering and leaving. This study will help

the school prevent and identify the students who are fond of cutting classes.

Significance of the Study

Students - In this research by tapping the card to in and out in campus to monitor

the Grade 12 Tech Voc Computer Programming students in Philippine Christian

University, Dasmariñas Campus. Students will be more secured and monitored if

they go to school or if they cut their classes and also this will help the students to

avoid cutting classes and absences without their parent’s permission.

Teachers – they can track their student’s attendance in a convenient and in the

easiest way of checking.

Parents - Parents will also benefit to our proposal, they will know if their child goes

to school or not our machine will notify them by receiving a text that their child are

in the campus. This will less their worries about their child if they go to school

safely.

Researchers - They will be able to gain more knowledge about this topic and also

this can help them to be more familiar about this topic.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Presented in chapter 2 is a synthesis of research that supports the

evaluation of the attendance policy and attendance program of Newport News

Public Schools. Included in the chapter is a historical overview of attendance, the

importance of attendance, overview of Newport News Public Schools, theoretical

framework, causes or predictors of student absenteeism, descriptions of related

attendance policies/ programs, and a review of perceptions and attitudes about

attendance policies/programs as indicated by literature review.

Historical Overview

Early homesteading laws allowed the settlers free land on which to build

schools. Schooling was perceived as the key to success for individuals and to the

excellence of society. Free and compulsory education came to England and Wales

following the Elementary Education Acts of 1870 and 1876, although not always

on a full time basis. The Education Act of 1918 finally abolished half time schooling,

and made elementary education entirely free and compulsory until the end of the

term after the child's fourteenth birthday. Nevertheless, in most parts of the United

States the problem of illegal absence dates from 1876. In the 1850s urban schools

6
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

suffered from an extremely high turnover of students. Many students were needed

at home to do many of the chores, especially if they lived on a farm. Other students

worked outside of the home to help support the family. Poor attendance was a

problem to teachers and parents well before school attendance became

compulsory. Pallister notes that enthusiasm for education varied with the

standards of the school; good schools quickly obtaining the support of parents,

and similarly bad schools, least in the eyes of parents, quickly losing support.

School attendance was a problem before education became free and

compulsory, and based on the researcher's knowledge and experience as an

educator, it has continued to be one ever since. The researcher notes that

attendance figures can be interpreted in different ways. There is little evidence that

school attendance rates have changed noticeably throughout the twentieth

century.

Importance of Attendance

Government officials, teachers' groups, and individual parents all have

voiced their concerns over the need to develop policies and practices to counteract

the problems facing our nation's schools today such as the dropout rate, drug

abuse, and declining education performance. Poor school attendance arouses

strong feelings in teachers, parents, members of the educational support services,

educational administrators, politicians, and pupils. These strong feelings are

7
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

expressed in different and often contradictory ways, depending on the individual's

own perspective.

The statistics related to school absenteeism are staggering. Each school

day, 2,500,000 students are reported absent from school. The dropout rate is

estimated at 27 percent nationally and over 45 percent in some cities. The 27

percent dropout rate equates to 65 busloads of students who leave United States

schools each week and do not return. In a year's time, 700,000 students will be

lost. In two years, the number will exceed one million.

Anyone who has skipped or had to repeat a grade, has been placed in or

excluded from a special program, or has been denied academic credit because of

absences knows the importance of local school policies. While scholarly attention

has tended to focus on federal and state education policy, those who attend and

work in schools realize that their lives can be affected greatly by policy made at

the school and district level.

Identifies eight distinct conceptions of policy. They include the following:

o Policy is an assertion of intents or goals.

o Policy is the accumulated standing decisions of a governing body, by

which it regulates controls, promotes, services, and otherwise

influences matters within its sphere of authority.

8
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

o Policy is guide to discretionary action. Policy is a strategy undertaken

to solve or ameliorate a problem.

o Policy is sanctioned behavior. Policy is a norm of conduct

characterized by consistency and regularity in some substantive

action area.

o Policy is the output of the policy-making system.

o Policy is the effect of the policy-making and policy-implementing

system as it is explained by the client.

The researcher believes that each of the above conceptions by Guda has

some value for the study of school district and school policy. Duke and Canady

refer to school policy as any official action taken at the district or school level for

the purpose of encouraging or requiring consistency and regularity. They further

state that the definition implies intentionality on the part of those developing policy.

Pizzo refers to school policy as fitting into ecology of public policies. In other

words, where the operation of public schools is concerned, a range of policy

sources can be identified. Pizzo further states that policies are derived from

Congress, the Department of Education, the courts, state legislatures,

intermediate agencies, school boards, and school-based personnel. To

understand educational policy in the United States, it is necessary to understand

each of these policymaking entities and the relationships among them.

9
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

Duke and Canady identify three reasons to study policy. First, many of the

education policies likely to have a direct effect on the lives of students, parents,

and teachers are local school policies. A state legislature may pass legislation

concerning the allocation of resources for education, but the legislation does not

become meaningful for clients, patrons, and employees until local policy decisions

determine how the available resources will be utilized. Second, schools serving

similar groups of students can differ greatly in areas such as student achievement,

attendance, dropped rate, teacher morale, and school climate. The third reason to

study school policies according to Duke and Canady is the fact that the number of

locally developed policies is likely to increase in the future. Interest in shared

decision making, teacher empowerment, school-site management, and the

restructuring of schools suggests that the locus of educational policymaking may

be shifting. Duke and Canady point out that ample justification exists for the

systematic study of local school policy. Such study promises to shed light on

school effectiveness, the process of school improvement, and local control of

education.

So frequent and so complicated have problems related to student

attendance become that many school systems consider them to be separate from

other discipline problems. This fact may be explained, in part, by the relationship

between school attendance and state aid to education and the link between

10
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

attendance and a student’s constitutional right to an education. Attendance rules

include those pertaining to unexcused absence from school and class, tardiness,

and leaving school without permission. Since, by law, students must attend school

up to the state-mandated school-leaving age, attendance-related issues for local

policymakers do not concern rules so much as the consequences for absenteeism

and attendance practices. In recent years, school policymakers concerned about

the relationship between the time spent in school and student learning have begun

to condone denying course credit and awarding failing grades for chronic

absenteeism. The number of absences resulting in denial of credit or a failing

grade usually ranges from 10 to 24 in a semester.

According to Eastwold, the truant is likely to be a boy and to be in the

eleventh or twelfth grade. The student is truant more often as the year progresses,

and skips some classes more often than others. He says he skips because he

dislikes the classes or considers them to be too boring to attend. However, he does

not necessarily intend to drop out of school. This student may have a job, or may

have been asked by parents to work at home or care for children.

Rood views absenteeism as a constant interruption of the learning process.

The more absences a student accumulates, the less he or she can be expected to

adequately participate in and understand classroom activities. Rood continues by

stating that it is no secret that the skill levels of many high school students have

11
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

declined while absenteeism continues to increase. He writes that on an average

Monday, many urban high schools have an absence rate of more than 30 percent.

It is common for many secondary students to miss 20 to 90 days of school in an

academic year. Rood, Levanto, and Hegner have identified the following

characteristics of non-attenders:

o Age – absenteeism increases as a student progresses through high

school.

o Gender – in the first three years of high school, girls will have higher

rates of absenteeism than boys will.

o Race – minority students are more likely to be absent than whites.

o School success – students with higher grades and/or IQs have better

attendance.

o Program – students in college preparatory programs are present

more often than those in vocational, general, or business programs.

o Family setting – students from a one-parent family have poorer

attendance rates than those from the more traditional family.

o School involvement – participants in a variety of co-curricular

activities will generally be in attendance more often than will non-

participants.

12
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

Eastwold indicates that the burden of reducing truancy rates rests primarily

with schools, and a message that can be drawn from the research is that schools

can affect truancy rate whenever they give high priority to effective attendance

policies. Eastwold identified the most effective policies as those that have the

following elements:

o Expectations and outcomes are clear and well publicized.

o Policies are followed consistently by everyone.

o Students are held responsible for their actions.

o Parents are involved.

Causes or Predictors of Student Absenteeism

According to Woog three theoretical categories identify the causes or

predictors of student attendance specifically are: those which identify the cause of

the absenteeism with the student or his/her family characteristics, those which

identify the student's social or economic environment as the causal factor, and

those which examine the effect of various school characteristics as influential in

the absentee rate of students.

 Galloway's research showed excessive absentees as students whose

families had experienced financial problems or whose parents experienced

poor health. Galloway suggests that the poor economic condition of the

13
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

family may generate a negative attitude toward school either because the

family needs the student to work and contribute to the family income or

because education is not perceived to be an avenue to increased economic

status.

 The largest factor in the average daily attendance of a school is generated

from influences which occur independently of the school's organizational or

attendance policy characteristics. Petzko's research concluded that

student's absenteeism is related to familial or cultural characteristics.

 School climate and organization characteristics of the school have also

been suggested as predictive factors in student absenteeism. The

Education Research Services Report suggests that staff/student

relationship, quality of instruction, curriculum standards, and attendance

procedures may affect absenteeism. Duke and Meckel studied two

California high schools and identified five organizational variables

potentially related to student attendance. Duke and Meckel conclude that

division of labor, micro-level decision making, rewards and sanctions,

macro-level decision making, training, and selection play a large part in the

cause of attendance problems at the two schools.

An investigation by Greene attempted to determine if a significant difference

existed between students having favourable and unfavourable attendance records

14
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

and whether absenteeism varied significantly between economically advantaged

and disadvantaged school communities. A variety of assessment instruments were

used to compare the top and bottom 10 percent of attendance in two economically

distinct high schools. Greene found that in both schools favorable attenders earned

consistently higher marks than unfavorable attenders. In the economically

disadvantaged school, favorable attendance was associated reliably with high IQ

scores, high socio-economic status, and parental opinion of the school. Greene

concluded that absenteeism is a behavior which is individually symptomatic of an

unfavorable adjustment between the learner and the educational and social

environment in which he/she is functioning.

Perceptions/Attitudes of Attendance

The performance or effectiveness of parents is affected by varying family

conditions, the changing structure, and mobility of family and poor socio-economic

circumstances. However, even where two parents are present in the home, they

may not be effective parents. The character of the parents themselves, their family

attitudes and attitudes towards their children, especially in the exercise of

parenting skills, and their attitude towards and involvement in school, especially in

support for the child, convey strong messages.

The parents' skills in the home and their attitudes towards the child in the

school and towards school in general are linked to attendance performance.

15
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

Parents of students with low attendance rates are often described as being only

nominally interested in school, as rarely inquiring about studies, as never

budgeting home study time, as fearing school and as avoiding teacher-parent

interviews.

Summary

An important aspect of students' access to education is the amount of time

actually spent in the classroom. When students are absent from school, arrive late,

or cut class, they are reducing their opportunities to learn. Furthermore, when

students disrupt classes by being late or frequently absent, they interfere with other

students' opportunities to learn. Perhaps most importantly, the habits of consistent

and on-time attendance are habits that will serve young people well in their future

work lives National Center for Education Statistics.

The literature described the history of attendance in the public school

system while validating the importance of good school attendance. The literature

continued by describing a clear picture of attendance issues in Newport News

Public Schools followed by theoretical frameworks, and causes or predictors of

students’ absenteeism. The literature concluded with a description of related

attendance policies/programs and perceptions and attitudes of school attendance.

16
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

The performances of every student are affected by family conditions,

environment, and structures. Even though families are complete, the characters

of parent themselves, their family attitudes towards their children especially in

parenting skills, and their attitude towards involvement in school are still affected.

Whether it’s a younger sibling, a grandparent, or someone with special healthcare

needs, oftentimes students are spending time helping their family instead of being

at school. It’s a tough choice student and families shouldn’t have to make, but there

are ways of easing the burden caregiving places on families. Mental and emotional

health issues can be also perfectly valid reason for missing school. But it’s

important for families to work with schools so students can move forward, as

extended absences can exacerbate both academic and emotional problems.

Parents must also be aware of it.

According to Jett and Platt they did this research to lessen the stress of their

teachers, parents and students. In other schools, only few students are absent

every year. My comment on this research is that they did the right thing because it

would be easy for them to check the students. They also can manage the welfare

of the students well. And it would be easy for the parents to check their kids if they

really are attending their classes. It is also better to give lesson to those students

who are always absent.

17
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

As for Duka and Canady, they made rules that whoever will be absent put

in a special program for them to know the importance of local school policies. Over

all purpose of this research is to show their concern for the students especially for

the parents. And also for the students to learn from their mistakes and for them to

know the importance of studies and school policies.

In the Research of Galloway's show that there are reason that students

absentees like Financial Problems and whose Parents Experienced poor health.

He suggested that poor economic Condition of family may generate a negative

attitude toward school.

The Largest Factor of attendance of a school generated from influences

which occur independently of school's organization or attendance policy. Woog the

Research about Education Research Service Report suggests that staff/students

relationship, Quality of instructions and Curriculum Standards may affect

attendance procedures absentees.

We have problems related when it becomes to student attendance.

Unexcused absence from school and class, tardiness and leaving school without

permission. In this problem is most likely a boy in his 11th or 12th year of grade

that he skips or dislikes the subject/s. being an absentee is a constant cost of lack

of learning and interruption of learning process. The characteristics of absentees

are by: Age – More absentees are high school because of their easily distracted

18
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

by the influences of their gang and of course by online games. Family setting –

Why family? Because we don’t know what’s happening in their home that can

affect or it is affecting the child or the student that they cannot show in school by

lack of money, problems with parents etc. The more absence he/she do the less

that he/she can participate or understand classroom activities. So the policies must

be followed consistently by every student and monitored all the students by using

our proposal.

Chapter V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION

Summary

The problem with the Student Attendance that it can affect the Student

Academic Performance in the school especially in their Grades if they are not

aware of it they might fail there studies. An alternative way to help them and their

parents to monitor their Son/Daughter by using our new way of tracking the

student’s attendance by using On Time Attendance Log System they can assure

that their Son/Daughter are coming to school every day because they can receive

a message from the school that their student arrived time at time that their

Son/Daughter Leave the School premises. It's been generations since the cutting

classes has been a trend, most especially to the students of elementary and high

school. A lot of students are able to manipulate their attendance in every class and

pretend as if they are really present even when they are not. Most usual case is

that they tell their parents that they will go to school but then go somewhere else

instead, and so if accidents occur, the university would apparently be involved and

be liable. Aside from that, the traditional listing of attendance is not as applicable

as it is before to the digital age and it’s ever evolving technology, Probably the

reason why there are cases where the attendance of the students are not accurate

and reliable enough for the professors, teachers, facilitators to believe.

50
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

The problem stated above is what the researchers are aiming to solve. The

researchers conducted a study wherein a high tech scanner which can easily

recognize the presence of every student from within the campus is involved. This

will give an assurance to the professors, as well as the guards of the University of

the Presence of every students every day. Rather than the traditional listing, the

scanner will offer the accuracy that is needed in terms of attendance.

The study will be focusing on the students of the Philippine Christian

University - Dasmarñas Campus in the academic year 2018-2019. The study will

only cover selected students of Grade 12 TVL ICT CP students as they are more

likely to understand our application compared to other strands.

The researchers conducted a survey and the participants are students in

the strand of Technological Vocational (TVL) as they are more likely to understand

the implementation of the scanner and its technicalities compared to other strands.

The teachers can also use the scanner for their record of attendances. The

scanner can only record those who will be entering the school to consider them

present.

The study is about having an application (On Time Attendance Log System)

to assist the Checking of Attendance System of the school that will benefit the

student. The content of the survey questionnaire that will be given to the

51
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

respondents will mostly be about the possible usefulness of On Time Attendance

Log System.

The research is a Quasi-Experimental research, a Quantitative study and

the researchers conducted a survey with scaled questions containing their possible

reactions regarding the implementation of On Time Attendance Log System.

We use the Formula of Sample Size for us to determine how many Students

from 200 Population of Grade 12 Tech-Voc Computer Programming students in

Philippine Christian University, Dasmariñas Campus. The Result of this we only

need to survey a 67 (33.5 %) Respondent students.

After collecting and calculating the data using the formula in Statistical

Analysis Of Data which is part of Chapter III Methodology to get the weighted

mean, chi-square, and the hypothesis testing, the researchers concluded that all

of the 67 respondents of Computer Programming student Grade 12 TVL agreed

most of the statements that the researchers made, the result from the weighted

mean is all 4 from all of the statements. The researchers used the Chi-square

formula to determine if the statements that the researcher made are valid or not

then after computation, the results of chi-square testing are all valid except for 1

statement, because all of the value of chi-square each statements are less than

9.488 except one which is 9.8 which is higher than 9.488 therefore making the

statement invalid. Next is the Hypothesis testing, the researchers use the formula

52
Philippine Christian University
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Dasmariñas Campus

for hypothesis testing to know if the given Null hypothesis will be rejected and

whether to accept the alternative hypothesis or not, and the result from the

computations of hypothesis testing is -0.4999 < 0.05 means that the given Null

hypothesis will be rejected and the study will accept the Alternative hypothesis.

Conclusion

The Survey-Questionnaire that the researchers constructed was answered

positively and most of the respondents agreed to the statements that were

answered by them. Therefore, the researchers conclude that the scanner is

needed to monitor the presence of the students and teachers from within the

campus and to also prevent the students from manipulating their attendance

records. Also it will be a great help for the students Parent for them to monitor their

son/daughter attendance is the school. After gathering the results of our Survey-

Questionnaire Eleven statements were valid while one statement was invalid.

Upon testing the hypothesis, we the researchers accepted the Alternative

hypothesis and rejected the Null hypothesis derived from the given data.

Therefore, the researchers conclude that On Time Attendance Log System is a

useful tool for Monitoring Attendance in Philippine Christian University-

Dasmarinas.

Recommendation

 Students - read every chapter thoroughly for their further

understanding regarding the scanner. After reading the study, they

will most likely understand the importance of the implementation of

the said scanner not only on the university but also to the students

themselves.

 Teachers - this On Time Attendance Log System will be a big help

for them to monitor their students attendance accurate and reliable.

 Future Researchers – The researchers recommend to focus more

on the system itself and benefits of the school when they have it.

Also researchers recommend to have survey on the school faculty

and staff in able to determine if it’s useful or not.
