Polyurethane composites are widely used in biomedical applications such as artificial arteries and veins. They can be fibrous or non-fibrous and are composed of polyurethane matrix with other materials like metals, ceramics, polymers, or nanostructures added. Polyurethane composites are investigated for use in various medical devices from catheters to artificial hearts due to their effects on physical, chemical, mechanical, and biocompatibility properties. The review discusses current and potential future uses of polyurethane composites in different biomedical products and applications of nanotechnology in medicine.

An overview of various biomedical application of polyurethane based composite
material have discussed in this paper. Polyurethane are mostly used in blood contacting devices such as arteries & veins, which affects the whole physical, chemical and mechanical properties as well as biocompatibilities of the material. These materials played a major role in the development of many medical devices ranging from catheters to total artificial heart. Different types of categories regarding polyurethane composite like fibrous & non-fibrous which is already in use or are investigated for various biomedical application are presented. General information regarding the presence of other materials like metal, ceramics and polymer in different forms resulting for making polymer matrix composite material. Natural and synthetic polymer are also taken into account during the composition of polyurethane composite. Incorporation of nanostructures in various biomedical applications has generated considerable research interest in recent years. The applications of nanotechnology in medicine and biomedical engineering are vast and spans areas such as implant and tissue engineering, diagnosis and therapy. The potential in future development of different kinds of biomedical products will also be discussed in detail.
