Two American scientists and a British researcher have won the Nobel Prize in
Chemistry for evolution research.
Frances Arnold and George Smith are of the United States and Gregory
Winter is British.
The scientists have been awarded for harnessing the principles of evolution
to develop proteins used to make everything from biofuels to pharmaceuticals.
Ms. Arnold, only the fifth woman to win a chemistry Nobel, was awarded
half of the $1 million prize while Mr. Smith and Mr. Winter shared the other half.
Ms. Arnold is the second woman to win a Nobel prize this year after
Canada’s Donna Strickland. Her research on enzymes led to the development of better
industrial chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Mr. Smith developed a method using a virus
that infects bacteria to produce new proteins while Ms. Winter used the same technique
for the directed evolution of antibodies.

The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Congolese doctor Denis
Mukwege and Yazidi activist Nadia Murad for their work to end sexual violence against
women as a weapon of war.
Murad, a member of Iraq's minority Yazidi community, was herself a
victim of sexual violence after Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants stormed
through her hometown and took her captive.
At 25, she is the second youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Peace
prize, after Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai.
She is also the U.N.'s first Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of
Survivors of Human Trafficking.
Mukwege has been a critic of the Congolese government and has treated
victims of sexual violence in that country for decades.
