Government introduces new scheme ‘Seva Bhoj Yojna’


· The Ministry of Culture, Government of India has introduced a new scheme namely ‘Seva
Bhoj Yojna’ with a total outlay of Rs. 325.00 Crores for Financial Years 2018-19 and 2019-20.

· The scheme envisages to reimburse the Central Government share of Central Goods and
Services Tax (CGST) and Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST) so as to lessen the financial
burden of such Charitable Religious Institutions who provide Food/Prasad/Langar (Community
Kitchen)/Bhandara free of cost without any discrimination to Public/Devotees.
· The Charitable Religious Institutions such as Temples, Gurudwara, Mosque, Church, Dharmik
Ashram, Dargah, Matth, Monasteries etc. which have been in existence for at least five years
before applying for financial assistance/grant and who serve free food to at least 5000 people in
a month and such institutions covered under Section 10( 23BBA) of the Income Tax Act or
Institutions registered as Society under Societies Registration Act ( XXI of 1860) or as a Public
Trust under any law for the time being in force of statuary religious bodies constituted under any
Act or institutions registered under Section 12AA of Income Tax Act shall be eligible for grant
under the scheme.

Donald Trump has roped in a top Indian American nuclear expert for a key administrative
position in the department of energy.
Trump has announced his intent to nominate Rita Baranwal to be an assistant
secretary of energy (nuclear energy) at the Department of Energy.
Pankaj Sharma has been appointed as the ambassador and India's permanent representative to the United
Nations Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), which represents nearly 45,000 listed companies, has
appointed NSE's Managing Director and CEO Vikram Limaye as the chairman of its working
group committee.
WFE, which is the global industry association for exchanges and clearing houses, also

Nepal will host the fourth BIMSTEC Summit on August 30 and 31 in Kathmandu.
After the stalling of the SAARC process, India has been actively pushing Bimstec,

Coast Guards of India, Vietnam hold joint exercise off

A Vietnam Coast Guard ship, on its maiden visit to Chennai, undertook joint exercises
with the Indian Coast Guard off the city coast aimed at strengthening the working level
relationship between them.
Coast Guard ships Shaurya, Arnvesh and inreceptor boat C-431 along with a Dornier
aircraft and Chetak helicopter participated in the joint exercise - 'Sahyog HOP TAC-2018",
India and Japan signed a currency swap agreement worth $75 billion during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s
visit to Japan.

 Three scientists won the Nobel Physics Prize, including the first woman to receive the
prestigious award in 55 years, for inventing optical lasers that have paved the way for
advanced precision instruments used in corrective eye surgery.
 Arthur Ashkin of the U.S. won one half of the nine million Swedish kronor
(about $1.01 million) prize, while Gerard Mourou of France and Donna Strickland of
Canada shared the other half.
 Mr. Ashkin, 96, was honoured for his invention of “optical tweezers” that grab
particles, atoms, viruses and other living cells with their laser beam fingers.
 Two American scientists and a British researcher have won the Nobel Prize in
Chemistry for evolution research.
 Frances Arnold and George Smith are of the United States and Gregory
Winter is British.
 The scientists have been awarded for harnessing the principles of evolution
to develop proteins used to make everything from biofuels to pharmaceuticals.
 Ms. Arnold, only the fifth woman to win a chemistry Nobel, was awarded
half of the $1 million prize while Mr. Smith and Mr. Winter shared the other half.
 Ms. Arnold is the second woman to win a Nobel prize this year after
Canada’s Donna Strickland. Her research on enzymes led to the development of better
industrial chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Mr. Smith developed a method using a virus
that infects bacteria to produce new proteins while Ms. Winter used the same technique
for the directed evolution of antibodies.

 The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Congolese doctor Denis
Mukwege and Yazidi activist Nadia Murad for their work to end sexual violence against
women as a weapon of war.
 Murad, a member of Iraq's minority Yazidi community, was herself a
victim of sexual violence after Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants stormed
through her hometown and took her captive.
 At 25, she is the second youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Peace
prize, after Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai.
 She is also the U.N.'s first Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of
Survivors of Human Trafficking.
 Mukwege has been a critic of the Congolese government and has treated
victims of sexual violence in that country for decades.
