Mathematics 7

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the student shall be able to:
A. differentiate constant, variable and algebraic expression.
B. solve the problem involving constant, variables and algebraic expressions.
C. value the importance of Fundamentals of algebra.

II. Subject Matter


Topic: Constant, Variable and Algebraic Expression

Materials : Illustration image, Visual aids, chalks, answer and activity sheets.

III. Learning Procedure


a. Routinary Activities

 Greetings
 Classroom management
 Checking of Attendance
b. Review
Let the students recall their past lesson.
c. Motivation
The student will observe the following pictures of a plant and an empty
flower pot in different period of time.

Questions:
a. In one week what are the heights of a plant and an empty flower pot?
In 2 weeks? In 3 weeks?
List down the data.
b. What happens to plant after several weeks? To the empty flower pot?

These will lead to the lesson of constant and variable.


d. Lesson Proper

Activity
1. The students will be group into 10 consisting of 7 to 8 members.
2. Each group will be given an activity sheets.
3. The groups will answer the following problem given to complete the table.
4. They will be given 5 minutes to answer and finish the activity.
5. After 5 minutes the groups will pass the papers.
6. The teacher will post the table written on chart for the student to put
their answer.
7. The teacher will call random members of the group to complete the table.
8. Checking of output.

Activity Proper

Joey sells apples to the group of students. Ana bought one for herself for only 5 pesos and Roy
bought 3 apples and he paid 15 pesos. The other students also bought respective numbers of apple.
How much will the other students pay to Joey?

a. Complete the table of Values.

b. Write your pattern in words and show your solution.

Analysis

Abstraction

Algebraic expression is any combination of one or more constants


and variables along with at least one Mathematical operation.

Constant is any symbol representing one fixed value. It is written in numerals


0, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9...

Variable is a symbol representing possible values of a quantity.


It represented by pictures or letters like x, y, a, b, c
Solving problem involving concept of variables.

a. Complete the table.

b. Write the patterns in words and in symbols.


To find the cost to be paid to Joey by each students, multiply the number of
apples by 5 pesos, that is,

Number of apple x 5

Let y be the number of apples


The 5 pesos cost for an apple by y number of apples is

y x 5 or 5y
Check if the expression is correct.
For y = 1, 5(1) = 5
Y =3 5(3) = 15
Y= 5, 5(5) = 25
y = 7, 5(7) = 35
Y =10, 5(10) = 50
Y= 13, 5(13) = 65
y = 14, 5(14) = 70

The expression 5y, where y represents as the number of apples the student bought is
an example of Algebraic expression.
5 is the constant
y is the variable

Another ways in expressing product can be written as follows:

5y, 5(y), 5 ● y, 5xy


And also fraction bars to indicate division.

Application
Decide whether each quantity is a constant or variables.

1. the electric bill each month variable


2. the number of days in a week constant
3. the number of hours of daylight in a day variable
4. the number of sides in a pentagon constant

List the possible values of a variable.


1. m is a negative integer greater than -3 {-2. -1}
2. y is the age of the teenager {13, 14,15,16,17,18,19}
