Testimonies about the Creole language

Reflection

Colonization and overpopulation to long history has caused social differences, inequality
between the inhabitants the same territory, it imposing their language as principal way of
communication and putting aside, the mother tongue, customs, traditions and values of a
region; as it has happened with San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina population,
which they were identified as Creole before they were overpopulated. Creole is a very
important language that we must keep and learn from it, since it comes from our history
and identifies the population San Andres. San Andres is not wonderful just for the large sea
that we observe and its beaches, San Andres is wonderful for its culture and predecessors
who formed this beautiful place; for this reason, their language, customs, behavior, must
not disappear for the Colombian government, who want to change the image of this region
and leave behind the identity of each person.

In the same way in the school, teachers and civil servants must use this mother language

because it is own of the region, English and Spanish are important for the learning of each

child, but these two languages would pass to a second language that children must acquire,

but not delete their mother language, which identifies them. As Mr. Samuel Robinson

Davis (Culture Manager) says: “This is how we speak our creole, which we should be very

proud of it”, and Mr. Dulph Mitcheil James (researcher linguistics) “ for my it is a

language because we are communicating and a language is a mean of communication”.
