Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Cloud Types
Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S4E4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to predict weather events and infer weather patterns
using weather charts/maps and collected weather data. c. Ask questions and use observations of cloud types
(cirrus, stratus, and cumulus) and data of weather conditions to predict weather events.

Technology Standard Addressed:
Standard 1, Empowered Learner. Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving,
and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

Selected Technology Tool:
☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
- Teacher has the ability to create questions and word them exactly like they were discussed in class
- Question and answer choices can be read aloud for students
- Teachers can customize how long students receive to answer each question

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
To start the lesson, I will have the students each take a scratch piece of paper and draw what they think
clouds look like. I will take those drawings and put them up on the board. I will then play the BrainPop video
for the students to watch. Once students have watched the video I will then have the students take three
paper plates, colored pencils, glue, and cotton balls, to create what they think three different skies (with the
three different types of clouds) look like. Once the students have created the different types of clouds, I will
have the students break up into groups of four to five students where they will create an iMovie that talks
about the different types of clouds there are, and I will have the students use their art as visuals in the video.
I will have the students share the movies they created with their classmates.

I will then introduce this Kahoot! by asking students to each get their iPads and pull up the Kahoot! app. I will
quickly review with the students how to work Kahoot! and explain to them that they have a limited time to
click the one best answer that fits the question. I will then have the students sign in using the Kahoot! code
and we will begin the assessment.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the activity the teacher will click through the questions on the computer and read out the questions
and answer choices for each question. The teacher will stop between each question and have a student who
volunteers explain why each answer is the single best answer choice. The students will answer each question
on their iPad by clicking the single best answer choice. The students will then volunteer to explain why each
answer is the single best answer.

Each student will need an iPad and the teacher will need an Interactive White Board. This activity will last
between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on how long the conversation between questions last.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
The students will be able to see a correct answer right after the time is up for each question. This will help
students see what they still need to be working on.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After this activity, I will have students place their heads on the table and hold up their thumbs showing how
they felt about the Kahoot! and how they did. They will place their thumb up if they feel comfortable, in the
middle if they are doing okay but need a little more help, and down if they are lost.
How will the data be used?
The data that will be collected from this activity is how much the students know about clouds thus far in this
unit. The data will be used by me to assess what needs to be taught again to the class.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
My personal learning goal for this activity is to more efficiently and effectively gather data on my students in a
quick manner to determine what needs to be retaught.
Reflective Practice:
I think using this SRT, students will have more fun participating in an assessment. To further extend this
lesson I could have students go outside each day and record the clouds they see outside with three facts
about those clouds.
