Sound

A form of energy made by vibrations.

Sound Travels Through Matter

Solids
Some sounds that we hear travel through solids.
For example: When you hit a drum, it vibrates,
then the sound travels through the air, to your
ears.
Liquids
Some sounds that we hear travel through water.

Sonar is the way to use sounds to locate objects

under water.
Gases
Most of the sounds we hear travel through gases,
such as air.
For example: Sound from a bell, a horn, or an
alarm clock travels through the air.
 Longitudinal Wave or Compressional
Wave
wave particles vibrate back and forth along the
path that the wave travels.
 Compressions
The close together part of the wave
 Rarefactions
The spread-out parts of a wave

 Transverse waves
wave particles vibrate in an up-and-down
motion.

 Crests
Highest part of a wave

 Troughs
The low points of the wave

Amplitude-
is the maximum distance the particles in a wave
vibrate from their rest positions.

Frequency
the number of waves produced in a given time.

Wave Velocity - is the speed with which a wave

crest passes by a particular point in space
It is measured in meters/second.
Wave Velocity = Frequency /Wavelength

Properties of Sound

1.Pitch
- description of how high or low the sound seems
to a person

2. Loudness-
how loud or soft a sound is perceived to be.
Doppler Effect
is the apparent change in the frequency of a
sound caused by the motion of either the listener
or the source of the sound.
