Lesson plan #1:

Topic: Math word problems using symbols and words in math

Standards: CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1
“Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding
to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions,
e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to
represent the problem.”
Big Idea: I will be able to solve word problems by comparing and using objects that represent
things using addition and subtraction.
Objective: Students will be able to add and subtract using word problem solutions and using
math symbols to find the right answer to the problem.
Lesson Plan: We’re going to use different symbols and words that represent adding and
subtracting. We’re going to explore how the symbols and words are used in story problems and
identify where to find them in a math problem. We’re going to draw the equations and the
symbols on the whiteboard to give students a visual understanding of the math problems.
Date: 7/10
Topic: Math word problems using Grade Level: BYU-I Student Names: Jeff Huish
symbols and words in math 1st and Shauntanika

CCSS: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of
adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all
positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown
number to represent the problem.

Curricular objective/s: Students will be able to learn word problems that involve putting things
together and taking them apart and what the problems and equations mean.

Curricular assessment: Put a smiley face or unhappy face or Informal thumbs up/down if they
are understanding the lesson and teaching.

I can statement/Target: I will be able to solve math problems using word problems and using
objects and equations to solve the problem.

Vocabulary terms and definitions:

Sum: to find how many there altogether
How much: how many are in the group and all together
Less: take away from the group
Left over: how many are left
Materials:
Paper Towels, White Boards, Blocks, Jars, Pencils, Paper

Accommodations:
High: The above grade level student will be given more complex problems to solve and work
on such as more complex story problems.
On Grade: The students that are on grade level will be able to do the work.
Low: The teacher will sit by and watch them and help them work and teach them about the
math work and use examples to help them learn.

Procedures:
Students will be reminded at the beginning of the group time to use materials for the day
gently and respectfully and they do not walk away by themselves and to raise your hands when
you have a question to ask. Also, they will be reminded to use our talking voices inside the
room.

Time Sequence of Lesson Materials

Attention Getter The students will see different words on the white White Boards,
board and the teacher will ask the students, “What Markers
do these words mean?” The students will tell what
they know about the words and whether they
should be categorized with addition or subtraction
or multiplication. Then the teacher will ask the
students if they can come up with any other
additional words. While one teacher is talking
about, the other core teacher will be doing some
observations.

Teaching “Today we will be talking about words and

symbols we use for math.”

Modeling The teacher will write down math words and math White Boards,
symbols in the following categories in math: Markers, Blocks,
addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Then the Jars
teacher will use the white board to write down
corresponding symbols we use in math. Then the
teacher will use a story problem and a few math
problems to demonstrate.
Check for Teacher will check for student understanding by
Understanding asking students to put their thumbs up in the air if
they are getting and understanding the information
and to put their thumbs down if they are not
understanding how to do it.

Guided Practice Students will be given a white board and a marker White Boards,
and will come up with story problems and will be Markers
guided by the teacher with the problems that they
come up with.

Brain Break Students will take a break and play math BINGO.
They will be given an opportunity to get a drink or
use the restroom.

Teaching Students will complete a worksheet that contains

word problems and math problems for them to
practice.

To be collected: The students will be given an index card with a smiley

face, a neutral face, and a frowny face to rate their understanding for that
day. On the opposite side of the note card, they will write what they
learned and how they felt.
