IEC Cable Sizing Report

Important Note: If you change the common input data (e.g. basic cable and load information) on
one page, make sure to run all of the relevant calculations again!

Basic Information
The following basic cable specification was
selected:

Conductor material: Aluminium

Insulation type: PVC
Number of cores: Multi core
The following load parameters were selected:

Number of phases: Three phase

Nominal load voltage: 400 V
Full load power factor: 0.8 pu
Rated load: 20 kW
Load efficiency: 1 pu
Full load current: 36.0844 A

Voltage Drop Considerations

The calculation of a three phase voltage drop for
a 35 mm2 cable is based on the following
equation:

Where V3Φ is the calculated voltage drop (V)

I is the full load current = 36.0844 A

L is the total cable length = 100 m

Rc is the cable ac resistance = 1.06 Ω/km

(based on typical values)
Xc is the cable ac reactance = 0.0826 Ω/km
(based on typical values)

Result: The voltage drop across the 35 mm2

cable is V3Φ = 5.6098 V (or equivalently
1.4024 % of nominal voltage)

Ampacity Considerations

Reference installation method: D2

The cable is installed under the following conditions:

Soil Temperature: 50 °C
Installation type: Direct buried
Underground spacing: 0.25m
Thermal resistivity: 2.5 °K.m/W
No. of grouped cables: 3 cables
Given this cable installation, the derating factors are as follows:

Soil Temperature: 0.63 (IEC 60364-5-52 Table B.52.15)

Thermal resistivity: 1.0 (IEC 60364-5-52 Table B52.16)
Underground spacing: 0.8 (IEC 60364-5-52 Table B52.18/19)
Total derating factor: 0.504
Result: For the full load current: 36.0844 A:

Minimum Multi Core cable size is: 35.0 mm2

Cable base ampacity: 83.0 A (IEC 60364-5-52 Table B.52.4)
Installed / derated ampacity: 41.832 A

Short Circuit Temperature Rise

Adiabatic short circuit temperature rise is based on IEC 60364-5-54 Clause 543.1.2:

Where A is the minimum cable cross-sectional area allowed (mm2)

i is the maximum prospective fault current = 2000 A
t is the maximum fault duration = 1 s
k is a constant factor determined from IEC 60364-5-54 Annex A:

Based on initial and final conductor temperatures θi = 75 °C and θf = 160 °C

k = 73.5952

Result: Minimum cable size based on short circuit temperature rise is A = 27.1757 mm2
