Rationale of the Study

Many children grow up with parents working abroad. Missing the

parents’ moral support may be harmful for the children’s well-being.

However, migration of parents abroad for working purposes may be a

significant way of generating income. Parents get better paid jobs abroad,

providing children with more financial and educational resources.

Overseas migration of parents from the Philippines has resulted in

increasing number of long-term separations of parents from the children. It

is hard to have parents who are working abroad because of the distance.

So, a number of children these days experience the absence of mothers or

fathers. The situation is far from normal and is more-likely to cause a huge

impact on the mental and emotional well-being of the children (Williams,

2010). Parents are the ones who should always be there to support the
children. The absence of parents may result to rebellion and feeling of

despair on the part of the children.

Overseas Filipino Workers work overseas because of the benefits of

having higher salary and several opportunities offered in other countries.

These people work strenuously and endure pain in order to provide the

needs of the family these people left behind in the Philippines. However,

serious issues are arising, regarding the school performance and familial

relationship of the children left behind.
