Great
Commission
Connection

Then He said to His disciples, “The

harvest is plentiful but the workers
are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest,
therefore, to send out workers into
His harvest eld.”
Matthew 9:37-38

First Baptist Church Naples

Reconnecting with the Great Commission
Missionaries often have a good sense of humor. One missionary
was a speaker at a dinner in his honor. He was getting ready to
return to his overseas assignment, and with tongue in cheek,
said, “I want to thank you for your kindnesses. I want all of you
to know that when I am out there, surrounded by ugly, grinning
savages, I shall always think of you people.” It is certainly a hard
job, and we must think of these great servants of the Lord and
pray for them. After all, Jesus Christ was the greatest missionary
in coming to an unreached world.

In His Great Commission, Christ commanded that we “go and make disciples.” As
the great witness to India, Henry Martyn, said, “The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of
missions, and the nearer we get to Him the more intensely missionary we must
become.” All of us are the fruit of some kind of missionary work. Fairness and
godliness demands that I do to others as someone did to and for me!

Southern Baptists have the greatest missions force in history. Our Cooperative
Program supports those on this continent and around the world. Our six top-
flight seminaries train thousands, including many like your staff, my wife, and
others who “equip the saints” (Ephesians 4:12). The Lord gave to me an unusual
vision last year to help us to personalize missions and to support them with
prayer and extra financial giving. We call it the Great Commission Connection,
with over 600 church family units this year accepting responsibility to pray for
an International Mission Board family, a North American Mission Board family,
and a Florida Baptist Convention staff family or a faculty member of one of our
seminaries.

As is the case with imperfect humans, some of us have been negligent, and some
of the missionaries are not inclined to build relationships and a network. After all,
it is a new concept. However, untold fruit and many testimonies abound testifying
of good experiences. Also, you have given over $47,439 in loose change through
your Change the World bank this year to the Cooperative Program fund. I am
so proud of you!

I am urging you to rekindle the fire and to recommit to adopting these families
or taking on new missionaries. We have pressed our Mission Boards, and they
have graciously given us new people who need ministry. Let’s not let them
down. After the service, go to the Great Commission Connection tables in the
Commons, sign up, and take your personalized packet. If you are not ready to
commit, pray about it and call us later this week.

Guest Reception
There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the
Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00 a.m. service. Come and meet
Dr. Wicker.
THIS WEEKEND!
NEW THIS YEAR...a social network
to connect with your missionaries!
If you haven’t participated in the Great Commission
Connection yet, this is a great time to get involved. We
have a new set of missionaries just waiting to hear from
you and feel your prayers. Simply come to the tables
in the Commons this weekend and we’ll get you all set
up with a missionary packet with three missionaries for
you to be in contact with and to be praying for, as well
as a Change the World bank to put your loose change
in everyday (all proceeds go to the Southern Baptist
Cooperative Program to support missionaries).

Once you sign up, we’ll email you within a week with
instructions on how you can join our Great Commission
Connection social network to connect with your
missionaries online!

Currently, we have 1,487 church members connected to

over 1,000 missionaries!

Worshipful Atmosphere
It is our desire that Jesus be the focus in our worship services. Therefore, in
consideration of others desiring to worship with limited distraction, we ask
each person to please do the following:
- Please turn your cell phone off or set to vibrate.
- Please remain in the worship center (except
in the case of emergency) once you have entered
to worship.
- Should your child become unsettled or noisy during
the worship service, please take your little one to
the Fellowship Hallway, the Commons, or the
preschool ministry area in the Education Building
where you can comfortably watch the service on a
television monitor.
Thank you for helping us maintain a worshipful atmosphere for everyone!
