FORGING TOOL DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING OF CONNECTING ROD

ABSTRACT

The connecting rod is the intermediate member between the piston and the
crankshaft. Its primary function is to transmit the push and pull from the piston pin
to the crank pin and thus convert the reciprocating motion of the piston into rotary
motion of the crank.

The aim of the project is to design a connecting rod for a 150cc engine
motorbike using empirical formulas. A parametric model of connecting rod is done
in 3D modeling software CREO 2.0 (Pro/Engineer).

The manufacturing of connecting rod can be done by using Forging, Casting,

Direct Machining, and Powder Metallurgy. In our project we have chosen
manufacturing process is Press Forging.

Forging is a plastic deformation process in which the work piece is

compressed between two dies, using either impact or gradual pressure to form the
part. This process is used to shape metal objects that must withstand great stress.
In this project we are going to design the forging tool according to industrial
standards. Machining process for all parts.
Analysis will be conducted on forging die using two materials to suggest best
material for die macking.

For modeling and manufacturing process software used is CREO 2.0
