● Development –
○ Start reading Creepy Carrots .
○ After reading review what happened in the book.
○ Hand out venn diagram papers and have students clip them onto clipboards and write
their name and date on top.
○ Have a large venn diagram drawn out on the whiteboard.
○ Review how to use a venn diagram
○ Label the circles the different story titles.
○ We know one thing in common with both the stories already they are both what type of
book.
■ Fantasy
○ Let’s think about Blast Off. What about that story makes it a fantasy?
■ The playground turned into a rocketship.
■ The children went to space.
■ There was an alien on the green planet.
■ The mothers did not notice that they children flew off in a rocketship for hours.
■ The flower made of feathers.
■ The animals talked.
○ A few of these will get written down. Depends of what they respond with.
○ The animals talk will have to go in the middle because the animals in Creepy Carrots
talked also.
○ Let’s think of things about Creepy Carrots .
■ The carrots came to life.
■ The carrots turned into other items to hide.
○ Let’s look at the middle of our venn diagram. It it the things that are the same about both
stories. They both have talking animals. Also they are both fantasy books. There are
some things that are different about these fantasy books and there was one thing the
same. With that information do you think all fantasy books will have talking animals? Turn
and talk to your peanut butter and jelly partner about why.
■ No because all fantasy books can be different
○ Next time you read a fiction book I want everyone to think about if it is a fantasy book or
not. How can we tell?
■ Has things that can not happen in real life
