4/27/2019 Summer camps in the Salem-area for children, teens in Oregon

Art, music, sports offered at more than 100 summer

camps for kids, teens
Abby Luschei and Natalie Pate, Statesman Journal Published 6:00 a.m. PT May 11, 2018 | Updated 2:28 p.m. PT June 12, 2018

This story has been updated to show new dates for CCTV Summer Video Camps and information about South
Salem Church of Christ's Vacation Bible School.

During the school year, kids are consistently learning. Experts compare it to a faucet that's always running —
until summer, when it abruptly shuts off.

Without mental stimulation, students experience summer learning loss, also known as the "summer slide."
(Photo: MOLLY J. SMITH / Losing that time can make it difficult to retain information learned during the school year and set them back
Statesman Journal) academically.

But putting on a production of "Shrek The Musical Jr.," exploring nature with hands-on experiments and learning about the mysteries of space are among
dozens of opportunities for Salem-area kids to keep learning.

Experts say that's super important.

Students at the greatest risk of sliding are students of color, students navigating poverty and students without access to books, libraries and summer
programs.

This contributes to the achievement gaps seen between these groups and their more affluent, white peers in graduation rates, test scores and other
indicators.

Most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in math skills, according to the National Summer Learning Association
(https://www.summerlearning.org/), and low-income students lose more than two months in reading achievement.

"Summer is the most unequal time," said Matthew Boulay, founder of the association, in a previous interview with the Statesman Journal
(/story/news/education/2016/06/24/book-targets-childrens-summer-learning-loss/86001088/). "Growing up, learning is a 12-month endeavor ... (It's)
inconceivable we ignore our children's needs for three months a year."

Boulay suggests parents continue whatever patterns and processes they follow during the school year. For example, if parents read with the kids at night,
set a bedtime, limit screen time, go over times tables before bed, etc., he suggests they continue those practices over summer.

recycling-rules-violation-mid-valley-garbage-recycling-association/586789002/)

He encourages teachers and principals to speak with parents about their options for the break, saying more people find out about opportunities because
their teacher told them.

"Summer is (the) time to engage in active learning — internships, travels, trips to museums, etc.," he said. "That is the time to do things you want to do,
but don't have time for in the (school) year."

While that is more difficult for some, there are dozens of options for Salem-area families of all incomes and for all interests.
