We will ask the wife to advise the brother in law for the last time on the effects of illegal
dumping and remind him that it is our job to remind him to stop doing the illegal dumping. We
will also remind him that his actions will put Loudness Corporation at risk, and it is my
responsibility as a member of the organization to put a stop to such illegal activities which can
harm the company.

If he refuses to stop/listen, we will collect evidence so that the brother in law cannot implicate us
in this issue and we will then report the issue to the higher authority in the organization and
allow the higher authority to decide whether to report the issue to a government body or not. If
the higher authority decides to proceed with the report, then we will use the hotline to report this
issue and ask the brother in law to confess in order to lessen the sentence.

We chose to proceed with the report because it is our obligation as the Chief of Health, Safety
and Environment (HSE) and we cannot allow our personal lives to interfere with our professional
career. If we chose not to report, our career and the reputation of the company is at risk. Besides
that, illegal dumping pollutes the environment and can contribute to the endangerment of aquatic
life.

Should the brother in law face any financial difficulties after paying the possibly hefty fine, we
would sincerely lend a helping hand to ease the burden faced by the brother in law considering
the fact that he has helped us previously when we faced financial difficulties.

We must make decisions based on ethics and rules set by the company and the government. As a
managerial staff, our decisions should be always rational and good for the company. Our
decision for this case study was made based on the utilitarian view of ethics, that says ethical
decisions are made solely on the basis of outcomes and consequences.
