Buddhist Symbols and Their Meanings

Buddhism is one of the major religions that made use of symbols significantly. The most
prominent Buddhist symbol is the Great “Buddha”. There are “Eight Auspicious Symbols” of
Buddhism, which originated in India and were used to represent coronations. It is known in
Sanskrit as ‘Ashtamangala’. Ashta means Eight, and Mangala means Promising.

1. Parasol - Symbol of royalty and also believed to protect people from illnesses.
2. Two Golden Fish - Symbol of Good Fortune.
3. Conch Shell - Representation of the Sound of Dharma.
4. Lotus Flower - Symbol of our Own True Nature.
5. Banner of Victory - It represents pride, lust, passion, and fear of death as well as
wisdom’s victory over ignorance.
6. The Vase - Symbol of a Long Life as well as Prosperity.
7. Dharma Wheel – Eight spokes each representing the Eightfold Path.
8. Eternal Knot - Represents the marriage of Wisdom and Compassion.
In addition to the above Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism, there is another symbol “The
Lion” which is one of the most important Buddhist symbols, represents the Buddha’s royal past
and power of his teachings. It is considered as powerful as a lion’s roar.
