Types of Welding Rod

● 6013 Welding Rod- The 6013 welding rod can handle 60,000 lbs. Strength per square
inch. The 6013 electrode is best used for light to medium penetration on a thin metal, or
sheet metal and the 6013 electrode is often used in situations that involve irregular or
short welds that require a change in position because it provides a very stable arc and a
smooth finish.

● 7018 Welding Rod- The 7018 is capable of withstanding the pressure of 70,000
pounds per cubic square inch. The last two numbers of this welding rod also inform us
that the electrode has low hydrogen coating iron powder. Therefore it is possible to use
both AC and DC currents to function this. The 7018 welding rod is sometimes referred to
as low-high rod. The reason for this is that the low hydrogen content of its electrodes
generally produces smooth, yet very strong welds and the 7018 arc welding rod is
commonly used for general-purpose welding of carbon steel.

● 6011 Welding Rod- This rod can withstand 60,000 pounds of pressure and it’s
applicable in all welding positions. The 6011 has very high coating level of cellulose
potassium. Hence, it can operate using AC and DC currents. This implies too that 6011
is usable with any type of welding machines in this rod you can achieve deep welding
penetration and this type of rod is used with corroded and dirty metals due to its deep
welding penetration and because of that it is greatly used in repairs.

● 6010 Welding Rod- The 6010 welding rod is ideal for deep penetration and welding on
corroded and dirty metals; hence it is ideal for patchworks and repair jobs and it has also
has the coating of high cellulose sodium which means it can be only used in DC current

Type of Electrode Code for TIG/MIG

● TIG Electrode Code

The gold 1.5% lanthanated tungsten

electrodes contain slightly less lanthanum
1.5% Lanthanated (Gold) than their blue counterparts and are best
used in DC applications. They are best for
welds with titanium alloys, copper alloys,
nickel alloys, and non-corrosive steel.

The blue 2% lanthanated electrodes are

popular due to the relative ease of striking
an arc and lower amperage required.
They perform exceptionally well in both
2% Lanthanated (Blue) AC & DC applications, and are a popular
general use electrode. Blue electrodes
are highly effective for welding aluminum
alloys, magnesium alloys, nickel alloys,
copper alloys, titanium alloys, low-alloyed
steels, and non-corrosive steels.

Grey 2% ceriated electrodes are popular

due to their extreme ease of striking an
arc with lower amperages, and their
2% Ceriated (Grey) extraordinary performance with regard to
DC welding applications. They perform
best with titanium alloys, copper alloys,
magnesium alloys, aluminum alloys,
nickel alloys, non-corrosive steels, and
low-alloyed steels

The red 2% thoriated electrode is

2% Thoriated (Red) America’s favorite electrode for a reason.
Extremely long lasting and highly durable,
these electrodes are a staple in DC
welding applications. These red
electrodes are perfect for copper alloys,
nickel alloys, titanium alloys, and non-
corrosive steels

The Rare Earth Mix electrodes are the

perfect substitute for the 2% thoriated
(red) electrodes. Fast and reliable arc-
Rare Earth Mix (Purple) striking, long lasting, and high durable,
these will perform during your most
difficult welding applications. Perfect for
aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys,
titanium alloys, nickel alloys, copper
alloys, low-alloyed steels, and non-
corrosive steels

The classic green pure tungsten

electrodes contain at least 99.7%
Pure Tungsten (Green) tungsten and deliver all of the benefits
typically associated with tungsten –
supreme conductivity, durability, and
performance. Green electrodes are
excellent for AC weld projects related to
magnesium alloy or aluminum alloys

The 0.8% zirconiated electrodes are

renowned for their extremely stable arc,
high resistance to contamination, and
0.8% Zirconiated (White) resistance to tungsten splitting. Ideal for
AC welding. They handle higher amp
levels for magnesium alloys and
aluminum alloys

● MIG Electrode Code

MIG welding wire selection. It covers most electrodes that are commonly used in the field
for,Carbon steel,Stainless steel and Aluminum.Typical MIG welding electrodes are a solid wire
ranging from a thickness of .023 .045.The smaller the electrode the less power you need from
your machine to run.

Welding Carbon Steels and Mild Steels

AWS Electrode Classification: ER70s-6

Shielding Gas: C25 (25% Carbon Dioxide and 75% Argon) or 100% Co2

❖ MIG welding stainless steel has a variety of electrodes because it is used on a wide
range of projects that require different types of stainless steel grades. It is also
commonly welded to Carbon steel on the same jobs. For example a stainless steel brace
that is welded to the building that holds stainless steel piping. Here are the different
types of stainless steel electrodes. Stainless Steel is typically welded with the electrode
classes and they are:ER308L, ER309L and ER316L

Welding Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel Grades: 301, 302, 304, 305, and 308.

AWS Electrode Classification: ER308L and ER308LSi

Shielding Gas: C2 or 2% Carbon Dioxide and 98% Argon

❖ The 309 series has a multi use designation because it is used to weld stainless steel to
mild or stainless to carbon or low alloy steels. It welds stainless steel grades 304 through
310 when needed or welds dissimilar metals together where needed. The downside of
using this electrode to weld steel to stainless is that the weld appearance is rough. It
does the job but no matter how high you turn up the machine it feels like it is running
cold. No matter what you do the welds seems to look rough compared to welding
stainless steel to stainless steel. The gas used most of the time is the same C2 or 2%
carbon dioxide and 98% Argon.

Welding Aluminum

Aluminum Grades: 2014, 3003, 3004, 4043, 5052, 6061, 6062 and 6063. It may also be
used to weld cast Aluminum grades 43, 214, 355 and 356.

AWS Electrode Classification: ER4043

Shielding Gas: 100% Argon

❖ MIG welding aluminum electrodes selection is pretty straight forward. There are two
typical choices and they are ER4043 and ER5350
