5/27/2019 SKF Mount - 22318 EJA/VA405 - Mechanical dismounting - Shaft and housing

Dismounting procedure
Designation: 22318 EJA/VA405
Dismounting Method: Mechanical dismounting
Interference Fit: Shaft and housing

Dismounting preparations

Carefully read all of the instructions before starting work. The instructions may contain alternative
tools and measuring methods. Illustrations are not always proportional and do not always show
the exact design. The instructions are valid for SKF bearings only. Where tool recommendations
are made, check the actual dimensions against the bearing and any other components that may
interfere with the use of the tool.

Mounting and dismounting of rolling bearings may involve the handling of heavy weights, the use
of tools and other devices, and the use of high pressure oil. To avoid accidents, injuries or damage
to property, please carefully follow the prescribed methods.

Arrange for a clean working place.

In case of bearing damage it might be necessary to analyse the bearing components to find the
cause and to take corrective actions, so dismount with care.

Review the actual drawing and study the bearing arrangement.

An undamaged bearing should be remounted in the same shaft position and orientation. Mark the
relative position of each bearing, i.e. which section of the bearing is up, which side is in front, etc.

Make sure that the shaft or housing is properly supported during dismounting.

Dismounting procedure

1. The preferred method is to allow the bearing to be pressed out of the housing with the shaft.

2. This technique ensures that no dismounting force is transmitted to the rolling elements.

3. If the inner rings are accessible, then a press can be applied to the shaft to enable the use of an
internal puller to remove the bearings from the housing.

4. The bolts of the bearing housing cover can be used to advantage. A special plate that abuts both
ring side faces simultaneously, so that the bearing does not moves along the shaft when it is
pressed out of the housing.

5. When the bearing assembly has been removed from the housing or the shaft, proceed according to
the instructions for either Interference on shaft or Interference in housing.
