The objective of Housekeeping work instruction is to provide CLEAR

This Housekeeping standard will apply to safety & housekeeping inspections for all
areas on site.

5. PROCEDURE
5.1 Within Operating Area
1) Debris, trash and foreign objects are to be collected and placed in appropriate
containers.
2) All containers holding any material shall be labelled as required by legal and/or
Corporate and/or site requirements. No chemicals or oil should be kept outside
curbed area UNLESS they are on spill containment skids.
3) Leaks shall be contained; areas affected by the leak shall be cleaned. Soiled
absorbent pads shall be replaced regularly. Floors must be oil-free.
4) Trenches and rain gutters should be clear of accumulated solid or sludge.
5) Waste containers shall be emptied every Shift, daily, weekly as needed.
6) Weeds, grass and other growth shall be controlled.
7) Cable trays entering buildings shall be sealed as required.
8) Chains used to open and close valves shall be strung away or have a
mechanism to improve visibility (e.g. tubes hung on them, chains painted
bright orange to improve visibility).
9) Tools and equipment are to be placed in appropriate storage locations (e.g.
valve wrenches, ladders at ladder stations).
10) No material shall be stored leaning against walls, columns or other structures.
11) Hoses shall be stored in hose racks. When necessary to store a hose for
short intervals in an area where a hose rack is not available, hoses shall be
coiled and stored where it does not present a hazard.
12) Grating shall be kept free of any object that can fall through it.
13) Unused and obsolete papers, books, operating instructions, or other obsolete
printed material shall be removed from the area and disposed of per site
requirements.
14) Control rooms shall be cleaned.

15) The top handrail shall be free of any obstructions.


16) Safety equipment shall be readily identified with dedicated storage areas (e.g.
respirators, extinguishers).
17) Signs shall be posted as appropriate and shall be clearly readable.
18) Exits are maintained clear for emergencies.
19) Insulation in good condition with no leftover insulation material observed.
20) Oil drums in use should be kept in horizontal positions on racks to prevent
water ingress.
21) Plugs & caps are in position at sections that are operating (not shutdown).

5.2 Outside the Operating Area


1) Grass and shrubs are to be groomed to a level expected to represent the
GOKPL image.
2) Debris, trash and foreign objects are to be collected and placed in appropriate
containers.
3) All containers holding any material shall be labelled as required by legal and/or
Corporate and/or site requirements.
4) Materials shall be stored in designated locations in appropriate storage
conditions.
5) Pipe bridges, cable trays, pipe ways, ditches and other areas shall be free of
debris and foreign objects.
6) The ground, weeds, grass or other growth shall not be permitted to come in
contact with piping structures or equipment.
7) Roadway, sidewalks and walkways shall be maintained.
8) Designated walkways shall be well marked.
9) Signs shall be clear of obstructions and readable.
10) Fences shall be clear of debris, weeds or other vegetation.

5.3 General Requirement


1) When a job assignment is completed, the area should be immediately cleaned
and all scrap materials will be properly disposed of. All usable surplus material
will be returned to the proper location.
2) The following guidelines will be followed when performing work at the plant:
a) Maintain clean & orderly work areas at all times. Move excess tools,
equipment & materials from work areas to avoid tripping hazards.
b) Keep aisles & walkways clear.
c) Secure valve chains out of walkways.
d) Clean & maintain areas where there has been a spill.
e) Secure equipment, tools & materials to prevent fall-over hazards.
f) Do not spit on floor, slab or walkways.

5.4 Offices
5.4.1 6.1.1. The following arrangements will be applied to office
accommodation:
6.1.1.1. All exits and access passageways, firedoors, break-glass alarm
points, fire fighting equipment, first aid stations, and other
emergency stations are to be kept clear and unobstructed.
6.1.1.2. Litter bins will be emptied whenever needed or at least at the end
of each working day.
6.1.1.3. Cords and leads will be situated to prevent trip hazards.
6.1.1.4. Fire extinguishers shall not be removed from their location.
6.1.1.5. Copier fluid or any other source of combustible material will be
stored in a safe place away from any potential ignition
sources.
6.1.1.6. Disposal of any hazardous waste will be in accordance with
Environmental Management Procedure.
6.1.1.7. Personnel will maintain a clean desk policy to prevent the build
up of paper or other combustible sources.

5.5 Construction Site


5.5.1 6.2.1. All workplace area’s are to be maintained clear of debris
waste and other rubbish, which shall be disposed of in segregated
containers for disposal.
5.5.2 6.2.2. An adequate number of container for storage and disposal of
waste materials will be provided
5.5.3 6.2.3. Any spillage’s, such as oil or grease will be immediately
cleaned up, by absorption in inert absorbent material or other
suitable materials. Toxic, corrosive or other hazardous liquids shall
be cleared up in accordance with manufacturers instructions or
material safety data sheet. All material used to mop up spills shall
be immediately removed to a safe place and stored in closed
containers for safe disposal.
5.5.4 6.2.4. Tools, equipment and raw materials in use at the workplace
will be kept to the minimum required, as commensurate with
efficient working practice. Tools and other equipment shall be
removed as soon as possible to their defined storage area after use.
5.5.5 6.2.5. Cables and hoses will be routed wherever possible above
grade to eliminate tripping hazards.
5.5.6 6.2.6. Shuttering and other timber articles will be de-nailed and
stacked in a location away from the work area’s and access routes.
5.5.7 6.2.7. Scaffolds will be swept and loose material removed on a
regular basis.
5.5.8 6.2.8. Designated area’s will be identified for the racking and
storage of scaffold tubes and fittings.
5.5.9 6.2.9. Where materials are being removed from elevated structures
proper arrangements shall be in place e.g., Barriers, signs, winches,
hoists etc. to eliminate the risk of injury to personnel working in the
area.
5.5.10 6.2.10. A concrete washing area with suitable drainage shall be
identified for concrete trucks, to prevent build up of waste concrete
from building up in site area’s.
5.6 6.3. Maintenance Workshops
5.6.1 6.3.1. Flammable liquids, including paints, thinners and solvents
will be kept in purpose built containers away from sources of
ignition.
5.6.2 6.3.2. Rags, Cardboard or other carbonaceous materials
contaminated by oil or other combustibles, shall be disposed of on
a regular basis to prevent build up and shall be contained in a
sealed container.

5.6.3 6.3.3. Area’s around grinders, lathes and other rotating equipment
shall be kept free of trip hazards and shall have safe access
maintained.

5.6.4 Maintenance pits shall be regularly cleaned and have any liquid
build up removed.
5.6.5 6.3.5. Sump oil shall be drained and contained in sealed containers.
5.7 6.4. General Considerations
5.7.1 6.4.1. When storing or placing materials, such as boxes, pallets or
containers supervision shall ensure that they do not pose a threat
to workers from lifting, tripping or blocking egress routes.
5.7.2 6.4.2. Laboratories and workshops shall be maintained clear of
debris, waste and other rubbish, which shall be disposed of in
accordance with manufacturers guidelines and the projects
Environmental Management Procedure.
5.7.3 6.4.3. Adequate time will be assigned to ensure that good
housekeeping is maintained. This may be carried out by the
workers in the particular office, workshop or site, or at the
discretion of the management, by a team of specialists cleaners
5.7.4 6.4.4. Any instances of poor housekeeping that results in the
creation of a tripping slipping of fire hazard shall be immediately
dealt with.
5.7.5 6.4.5. Materials shall be stacked and stored in a safe manner that
prevents sliding, falling or collapse.
5.8 6.5. Waste disposal containers shall be sited for food waste, and other
such areas as utilized for eating shall be kept clean and tidy.
