AQUACULTURE NCII POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

1. Do you know how to throw a cast net?

- Yes, you have to form a circle and catch cultured fish sample.

2. What are the steps in proper Pond Preparation?

10 steps in Pond Preparation (in order)

- Pond Draining
- Elimination of pest, predators and nuisance weeds.
- Pond harrowing
- Pond Drying
- Repair of Dikes, Water Inlet and Outlet/Canals
- Vegetating Top of Dikes
- Screening of water Canals/pipes (Supply and Drainage)
- Liming
- Initial filling of water
- Pond Fertilization to promote the growth natural foods

3. Why do you float the fry transport bag on the nursery pond prior to stocking?
- To acclimatize the specie into the new environment.

4. Why is it necessary to apply fertilizer on time? Why do you initiate predator control?
- To promote the growth of natural food and to add nutrient in the soil
- To eradicate undesirable species in the culture area.

5. When applying chemicals in the pond, what protective gadget or PPE do you use?
- Mask, Goggles, jacket, gloves, boots, long pants, Hat

6. Why should not use sodium cyanide for predator control? What are the alternative
materials you can use?
- Sodium cyanide is very poisonous at can be lethal not only to the cultured species but
also to the pond-aide who uses it.
- Another alternatives are tobacco dust, teaseed cake/powder and tubli roots.

7. What safety precautions must maintained in operating oxygen cylinder during

packaging of fry fingerlings?
- You must follow the seven (7) steps in preparing packing materials and equipment.
The steps stated that you must lean and tie the oxygen tank with rope on the post or
stand erect to prevent in from falling own or simply lay down the tank on the floor
putting pieces of wood or stone on both sides just enough to keep it from moving or
rolling. Also stated that you must fit it tightly with hose or plastic tubing to plastic bag
from tank valve where oxygen passes through and fasten with rubber band to prevent
leakage. Operate it by opening the gas regulator gradually to test whether fitting is
tight and to determine if leakage is present or not.

8. What safety precaution and first aid action must be taken against snake bites?
- Must wear safety boots and hard cloth long pants (jeans) or prescribe PPE during
conducting the operation but if the situation happened that when you already bitten
by a snake, you must remain calm and get a piece of cloth and tied it up near the
bitten area. Clean the wounds but don’t flush it with water, cover it with clean cloth.
Do not sip the bitten wound.

9. What do you do if you observe that all fish stock are gasping for air in the water surface?
- Operate aeration system either powered by electricity or manually (e.g. aerators,
paddlewheels) , do not blow the hose with your mouth as alternative aeration
- Change water
- Emergency harvest if comes worst

10. What will you do if you see deflated plastic bag with fingerlings during packaging of fry
fingerling in the pond?
- check if there is leakage, if there is leakage try to fix then add oxygen but if the leakage
is unrepairable, you must change the plastic bag with a good one.
11. What will you do if you see that some predators are swimming inside the nursery pond?
- Catch it using scoop neet..
12 . What immediate action would you take if moderate water leak was seen on the dike?
- Repair the leakage part of the dike with mud blocks (tabliya) by the use of “tagad” to
prevent total drain of the pond compartment; add water in pond compartment to
maintain the desirable depth
13.

14. What remedial measure would you take if the water pump suddenly stop?
- try different methods like siphoning process – transfer the water from water reservoir
by the help of the hose and the gravity.
-if the pond compartment has a small area, try to manually transfer the water from the
reservoir to cultured pond by interbasin process
15. what will you do if fish kill start to manifest after heavy rain?
- check the pH level of water, if it is acidic or not.
- change water
16. After stocking the fry/fingerlings in the pond, how many days after can you feed them?
- it depends on what aquaculture production system you used in your operation, if it
extensive, semi-intensive or intensive production system
-Extensive – you will not introduced artificial feeding (commercial feeds) because the
cultured species relying only by natural food exist in the pond
-in case of semi-intensive and intensive farming, you introduced commercial feeds a day
after stocking.

17. To prevent spread of fish diseases and preserve the environment, how do you dispose
dead fry or fingerlings?
- bury the dead fry/fingerlings away from the cultured area.
18. How do you dispose worn out plastic container net and fry bags in the pond?
-

19. Can you distinguish a good fish feed to a spoil fish feed?
- Yes, by its texture, appearance (presence of molds), rancidity

20. Are you allowed to smoke in oxygenating plastic bag?

-nope because we exhale carbon dioxide and it has a bad effects to the fish or it leads
to mortality of your cultured species.
