Synchronous Machine Sample Problems

Problem 1
A round rotor (RR), three-phase, 5-kVA, 208-V, 60-Hz, 1800 rpm synchronous
generator has Rs = 0, 𝑋𝑙 = 1 ohm (leakage reactance), and 𝑋𝑠 = 8 ohms (synchronous
reactance). The machine is connected to a 208-V infinite bus. It is supplying rated
apparent power at 0.866 PF lagging. Determine the value of (a) excitation voltage
𝐸𝑓 , (b) torque angle δ, and (c) total developed torque 3Td.

Problem 2
An 1800 rpm, 2400-V, 60-Hz, RR synchronous generator has Rs = 0 and 𝑋𝑠 = 4 ohms.
The machine is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The field current is adjusted
so that 𝐸𝑓 = 2300 V and δ = 25°. (a) Find the value of average power PT output. (6)
Determine the value of line current Ia. (c) Calculate the terminal PF.

Problem 3
A 3-phase, 6-pole, 150-hp, 60-Hz, 480-V, RR synchronous motor has Rs = 0.06 Ω,
𝑋𝑙 = 0.15 Ω, and 𝑋𝑠 = 1.5 Ω. The motor is fed by rated voltage and frequency while
driving a 150-hp coupled mechanical load. The motor field current has been adjusted
so that the input power factor is 0.85 leading. It is known that for the point of
operation, PFW is 5 percent of the total input power. Core losses can be neglected. For
the point of operation, determine the values of (a) excitation voltage 𝐸𝑓 (6) torque
angle δ, and (c) efficiency η.
