Experiment # 01

Errors, Accuracy, Precision

Task:

To calculate error in measurements.

Errors
Theory:
The deviation of the true value from the desired value. Error may be absolute or in
percentage.

𝑒 = 𝑌𝑛 − 𝑋𝑛

e = absolute error.

𝑌𝑛 = expected value.

𝑋𝑛 = measured value.

Percentage Error:

%error=(absolute value/expected value )*100

Accuracy
Task:

To calculate accuracy in measurements.

Theory:
𝑌𝑛 − 𝑋𝑛
𝐴=1−
𝑌𝑛

Where:

A= relative accuracy.

𝑌𝑛 = expected value.

𝑋𝑛 = measured value.

Percentage accuracy:

a=100% - %error

a=A*100%

Precision
Task:

To calculate precision in measurements.

Theory:
A measure of the consistency or repeatability of measurements. The precision of a
measurement is a quantative indication of the closeness with which a repeated set of
measurement of same variable agree with the average set of measurements.

(𝑋𝑛 − 𝑋̅𝑛 )
𝑝 =1−
𝑋̅𝑛
Where:

𝑋𝑛 =value of the nth measurement.

𝑋̅𝑛 = average set of measurements.
