Lesson Idea Name: Learning the Basics of Circles

Content Area: Geometry
Grade Level(s): 10

Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE9-12.G.C.2 Identify and describe relationships among inscribed angles, radii, chords, tangents, and
secants. Include the relationship between central, inscribed, and circumscribed angles; inscribed angles on a
diameter are right angles; the radius of a circle is perpendicular to the tangent where the radius intersects the
circle.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3c. curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and
methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.

Selected Technology Tool: BrainPOP

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I will use BrainPOP from a flipped classroom standpoint in order to allow the students to review instruction
and practice through games and quizzes. BrainPOP engages students in a variety of ways by providing
multiple means of representation. This platform also helps students increase their academic language by
presenting vocabulary in the additional reading and by providing real-world examples. BrainPOP is easily
accessible while it allows students to access it via their mobile devices and work at their own pace.

Instructional Software
Since this lesson will be taught via the flipped classroom approach, students will be asked to watch the
tutorial from BrainPOP (link shown above) and explore some of the practice problems and readings prior to
coming to class. This will introduce the students to the concept before class time, in order to increase class
time for questions, practice and collaboration.

Once students arrive to class, I will briefly review the concept and answer any questions the students may
have. We will then discuss the reading and spend some time discussing how they concept can be related to
the real-world.

Students will then form groups of no more than 3 to work on practice problems involving solving the
mathematical equations. They will then create real-world examples of their own and a presentation
explaining their process.

Students will present at the end of the class, or the beginning of next class depending on how the class goes
and how quickly they grasp the concept and practice problems.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson provided students with ample class time to practice their knowledge. I believe this is most
important in a math classroom as learning equations is done through repetition, which is why I decided to
incorporate the flipped classroom approach. Having this approach also maximized engagement by decreasing
lecture time and increasing group work and opportunities for creativity. To further extend this lesson, I could
access their practice work and presentations and use to create a differentiated activity for the following day.
