4th Grade Math Curriculum Overview

Math Introduction (7 Sessions) Standards

Review, assess, engage, & establish math community
Sept. 5- Review third grade skills, assess strengthens and
weaknesses, focus on basic fact fluency, establish class
13th math culture, understand math practice standards &
habits of mind
Unit 1: Arrays, Factors, and Multiplicative Comparison (12 Sessions) 4.OA.A.1
Multiplication and Division 1 4.OA.A.2
Sept. 16 - This unit focuses on using arrays and multiplicative Investigation 1: Representing 4.OA.B.4
comparison problems to understand multiplication, and Multiplication with Arrays 4.NBT.B.5
Oct. 4 gaining familiarity with factors and multiples. Students use
arrays to model multiplication situations and to find Investigation 2: Finding Factors
factors and identify prime numbers to 100. They use what
they know about factors of 100 to find factors of
multiples of 100, and examine the idea that factors of a
number are also factors of a multiple of that number.
Oct.7-11 Project Based Learning Unit: Multiplication

Unit 2: Generating and Representing Measurement Data (11 Sessions) 4.MD.A.1

Modeling with Data 4.MD.B.4
Oct. 15- This unit focuses on using line plots to represent, Investigation 1: Modeling with Data 4.MD.A.2
describe, and compare measurement data; on modeling 4.MD.B.4
25 real-world problems with mathematics; and on Investigation 2: Using Data to
constructing arguments based on data. Students measure Compare
and compare the heights of first and fourth graders. They
collect measurement data of their choosing, and use line
plots to represent and analyze the data.
Oct.28- Project Based Learning Unit: Data
Nov.1
Unit 3: Multiple Towers and Cluster Problems (18 Sessions) 4.OA.A.1
Multiplication and Division 2 4.OA.A.2
Nov. 4- This unit focuses on solving multiplication problems with Investigation 1: Breaking Apart 4.OA.A.3
2-digit numbers, understanding the meaning and structure Multiplication Problems 4.OA.B.4
27 of, and the relationship between, multiplication and
division, and using that understanding to solve Investigation 2: Solving Division
4.NBT.B.5
multiplication and division problems. Students use Problems 4.NBT.B.6
marked and unmarked arrays to represent multiplication
strategies that involve breaking numbers apart. They solve Investigation 3: Strategies for
and represent division story problems, including problems Multiplication
with remainders. Students develop strategies for breaking
the numbers in larger multiplication problems apart in
order to use number relationships that they know,
including multiplying by a multiple of 10.
