INCREASING READING COMPREHENSION LEVEL AMONG LEARNERS IN

NAAWAN CENTRAL SCHOOL, NAAWAN, MISAMIS ORIENTAL THROUGH
INTENSIVE REMEDIATION

Part I. Situation/Scenario/Setting

This school year, 2017-2018, in the Grade V-Endurance class it was found out

through basic reading activities and Phil-IRI results that there were eighteen (18) out of

forty-four (41) learners who were frustration readers, six (12) out of the ten (18) were

having difficulty in decoding basic English words.

Although inability to read could be attributed to a variety of reasons, nonetheless,

it limits a child’s performance not only in Languages subjects but in all other learning areas.

In everyday life, a person who cannot read is more at risk and prone to danger than a person

who can read and comprehend. This basic research was aimed at helping the six (8)

frustration readers decipher text with less difficulty.

Part II. The Intervention

In this research, a 27-day daily intensive remediation was used to address the

problem. It was done twice daily at 12:30 P.M. to 1:00P.M. and 3:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. At

the end of the session, the pupils were given assignments which they studied together with

their parents. Every morning following remediation, at 7:00 -7:30, the pupils were

evaluated of their progress.

Since the focus of this research was enhancement of word recognition skills in

English, the tasks started with simple letter sounds review, followed by CVC patterns,

CVCV patterns and Pre-primer and Primer Basic Dolch Words.

Part III. Summary

The goal of this study was to enhance the word recognition skills of identified

frustration readers of Grade V- Endurance and at helping these six (12) frustration readers

decipher text with less difficulty.

CVCV patterns and Pre-primer and Primer Basic Dolch Words,

It has been found out that daily remediation even for a short time can help develop

the word recognition skills of learners. The number of words that the learners were able to

read after the intervention has significantly increased as evidenced by their post-test result.

It has also helped change their attitude towards remedial reading as supported by their

responses in the post survey.

Indeed, the teacher plays a vital role in the progress of the learners. Instead of

blaming other grade levels for the incompetency that has reached the sixth grade, doing

something to address it and start where the learners are at present, is the better option. What

we dream, we should work for.
