A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer

Good morning class. Before we start, I am

Student A lead the prayer.
requesting everybody to please stand up for
our prayer. Student A, kindly lead the
prayer.

2. Classroom Management
The students will pick up the pieces of

arrange your chairs and sit properly.

3. Attendance
None, ma’am!
Is there anyone absent today?

Very good!

4. Greeting

Good morning once again class. Good morning ma’am!

So how are you doing today? (different responses)

It seems you have a great day, good!

B. Motivation

Are you ready for today’s discussion? Yes, ma’am.

Good! But before we start our lesson, we

will be having a game. I’m sure you are
very much familiar with Minute to Win It,
right? Yes, ma’am!

So the game is called “This Blows”. I need

four students to participate in this game. The
mechanics of the game is pretty easy, all
you need to do is inflate a balloon and use
the air to push the plastic cups until it reach
the finish line. Whoever reaches the goal
will be the winner.

Are you ready? In 3, 2, 1 go! Yes, ma’am!

The students actively participate in the
game.
The winner is student B.

What sort of technique did you do to make I just inflate the balloon much bigger so
the plastic cup push quickly to the finish that there will be so much force to push the
line? plastic cup quickly to the finish line.

Great! You can take your seat.

Now class, who could guess of what will be Student C raises her hand.
our lesson for today?

Yes, student C? I think our lesson for today is all about

work.

Correct! Thank you student C.

So, what comes into your mind when you Student D raises his hand.
hear the word work?

Yes, student D? For me, work is an occupation.

Very Good! What Else? Student E raises her hand.

Go ahead. For me, work is a task or an activity.

Very Good! All your answers are correct.

Work can be just about anything, working on
a construction, typing on a keyboard, driving
a bus, teaching a class, cooking food or
treating a patient. But, in Physics, work is an
abstract idea related to energy. And we
already know that energy is the ability to do
work.
C. Lesson Proper

1. Activity

Now, let’s have an activity. Group yourselves Students start counting 1 to 4. Then go to
into four. Start counting 1 to 4 from this side. their respective group.
Now that you already know your group
number; go to your respective group. This side
will be the group one, the other side group 2,
group 3 and group 4. Go, double time. You
make a circle.

I have four envelopes here and each envelope

has a picture that you need to form. After
completely formed the picture, you need to
paste it on the illustration board provided for
each group. I will only give you ten minutes to
do it. Each group should have one
representative to explain here in front whether
the picture represents a situation if the work is
done or no work is done.

Is it clear? Yes, ma’am.

Okay, you may start now.

2. Analysis
(Explain if the picture represents a situation
of work or not.)

Ok class, Time’s Up! (the students will stop what they are doing
and will sit properly)

May I call on the group one’s representative Group 1

to start over? And be ready next group.

Yes, the situation is an example of work.

The work is done by the girl on the cart. The
force exerted by the girl in pulling the toy
car is in the same direction as the distance
covered when the force is applied.
Group 2

Yes, the situation is an example of work.

The work is done by the man on the box.
The force exerted by the man is upward and
the box is displaced
Upward.

Group 3

No, the situation is not an example of work.

There is force (the shoulder pushes up the
bag) and there is displacement (the bag is
moved horizontally). However, the line of
action of the force and the displacement are
not parallel but perpendicular. The distance
covered is not along the direction of the
applied force.

Group 4

Yes, the situation is an example of work.

The work is done by the force of gravity on
the mango. In this case, the mango loses
energy as you will find out in the discussion
of potential energy.

Very well said! Thank you everyone for your

cooperation. Give yourselves a round of
applause. Job well done!
3. Abstraction

Now, let’s move on to our main discussion

for today.

Like what I’ve said earlier, work is an

abstract idea related to energy or a method of
transferring of energy. Think of a battery or
engines it ting ready to do work because it
contains a certain amount of stored energy.

Meaning to say, when work is done by an

object it losses energy and when work is done
on an object it gains energy.

Now how can we say that the object is doing Students raise their hands.
work?

Yes, Student F? When the object moves ma’am.

Take a look at this picture.

Can we say that there is a work done on the Yes, ma’am.

object?

How can you say so? Student G raises his hand.

Yes, student G? Because the object moves a distance

towards the direction that the girl applied
force to push it.

Very good! Work is done when the force

applied to the object causes the object to have
a displacement in the same direction as the
force applied. Displacement is an object’s
change in position only measuring from its
starting position to final position. In other
words, force and the displacement of the
object should be in the same direction or
parallel to each other.

Work is a scalar quantity meaning, it is a

magnitude only, described by just a single
number.
The work done by a force can be expressed
mathematically as:

W = Fd
Hence,

Unit for work = Force x displacement

Unit for work = N x m
Unit for work = N-m or joules, J

As you have learned previously, the unit of

force is

unit of force = kg m/𝑠 2 or newton, N

And the unit of measurement for

displacement is in meter.

The unit, joule, J is named after the English

Physicist James Prescott Joules. This is also a
unit for energy. One (1) Joule is equal to
work done or energy expended in applying a
force of one Newton through a distance of
one meter.

Let’s try to solve this problem.

Problem 1. Suppose a woman is pushing a

grocery cart with a 500 Newton force along
the 7 meters aisle, how much work is done in
pushing the cart from one end of the aisle to
the other?

Who wants to answer? Yes, student H. Student H solving the problem and shows
the answer.
W = Fd
= 500N x 7m
= 3500 N-m or J

Very good! The answer is 3500 N-m or J Yes, ma’am!

Easy right?

I have here another picture, look at this one. The boy pushes the wall but it doesn’t move
What have you noticed? (showing the at all.
picture)
Correct! As you can see, the boy applied Student I answer, I think there is no work
force trying to push the wall but the wall done ma’am. Because the force applied but
doesn’t move at all. Do you think there is the object does not move to the direction of
work done with this scenario? the applied force. We say earlier that work
is done if the object moves to the direction
as the force applied.

Exactly! If you applied a certain force to an

object and it doesn’t move or there is no
motion occurs, we cannot consider it doing
work. As what the scenario of this picture
showing to us. Just like in relationship, if two
people don’t have a strong commitment with
each other your relationship absolutely will
not work. Do you get it? Yes, ma’am!

How about this one?

Does this picture elicit a work? There is no work done ma’am.

Why? Because the force that the waiter exerted

does not make the tray move in the same
direction as the force he exerted

Very Good! In this case, the direction of the

force is upward and the direction of the
motion is sideward. Meaning to say the line
of action is not parallel but perpendicular,
still, there is no work done at all. Therefore,
we could say that there is work done if the
direction of the force and displacement is the
same.

If we illustrate the movement of force and the

direction of motion, it forms a 90º angle.
And if we mathematically equate this,

Work = Force x Displacement x cos 𝜃

Because we have an angle of 90º but in this

case the cosine of 90º is equivalent to zero.
Anything that multiplies with zero is equal to
zero. So therefore, in this situation there is no
work done here.

Do you understand class? .

Now, try this problem on the board. Who

wants to answer? Yes, student J.

Problem 2. A box is dragged across a floor Student J solves the problem on the board.
by a 100N force directed 60º above the
horizontal. How much work does the force do Solution:
in pulling the object 8m? W = Fdcos 𝜃
= 100N x 8m x cos(60º)
= 100N x 8m x 0.5
= 400 N-m or J

Very good! 400 J is the answer.

Generalization

Are there any questions? None, ma’am.

So again,

When can we say that work is done on an If the force and displacement is parallel with
object? each other.

Very Good!

How about if the object didn’t move when There is no work done ma’am.
you applied a certain force?

If the line of action of the force and Still, there is no work done ma’am.
displacement is perpendicular?

Very Good! You all did understand our

lesson.

4. Application

Let’s Apply!

I’ve prepared 2 sets of problem. With the use

of illustration board that I’ve provided to
each group, there you will write your solution
and answer to the problem I’ll be giving you
later on. Each member must cooperate. Every
time I’ll show the problem you immediately
answer and when I say times up raise your
illustration boards showing your solution and
answer. The group that will get all the correct
answers will have a prize.

Are ready? Yes, ma’am!

Alright, here we go.

Very good class! Here’s your prize.

IV. Assessment/ Evaluation

Okay class, since there are no more questions

and you all understood the lesson, so let’s
have a quiz. Get ¼ sheet of paper.
Direction: Write W if work is done and NW
if there’s no work done on the object.

1. Pushing a jeepney in a certain distance

2. pushing a wall
3. holding a book
4. lifting a suitcase
5. taking a load upstairs
6. How much work does a father do in
lifting his daughter 2.0 m in the air if he
exerts an average force of 190N?

Okay class, times up. Please exchange your (the students will exchange their papers)
paper with your seatmates and let’s check
your answer.
Ok, who got a perfect score? (the students raise their hands)

IV. Assignment

Advance study the kinetic and potential

energy.

That would be all for today.

Goodbye class. Goodbye ma’am.

See you tomorrow. Bye! 
