The Introductory Rites

1. When the people are gathered, the Priest approaches the altar with the ministers while
the Entrance Chant is sung.
When he has arrived at the altar, after making a profound bow with the ministers, the
Priest venerates the altar with a kiss and, if appropriate, incenses the cross and the altar.
Then, with the ministers, he goes to the chair.
When the Entrance Chant is concluded, the Priest and the faithful, standing, sign
themselves with the Sign of the Cross, while the Priest, facing the people, says:

Priest:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit.
The people reply:

Amen.
2. Then the Priest, extending his hands, greets the people, saying:
The grace of our Lord Jesus
Christ, and the love of God,
and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with
you all.

The people reply:

And with your spirit.
Penitential Act*
The Priest invites the faithful, saying:
Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us
acknowledge our sins, and so prepare
ourselves to celebrate the sacred
mysteries.
Then the people follows:
I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have
greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have
failed to do,
And, striking their breast, they say:

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault;
Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-
Virgin, all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray
for me to the Lord our God.
The absolution by the Priest follows:
May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive
us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
The people reply:
Amen.
The Bishop/Priest:
Glory to God in the Highest.
Gloria is sung

Priest, with hands joined, says:

Let us pray.
Father,
as we gather at the beginning of this new school year,
we ask you to send your Holy Spirit among us:
the Spirit of knowledge and wisdom,
that we may be guided and enlightened in our studies;
the Spirit of good judgment,
that we may make good choices and strong friendships;
the Spirit of courage,
that we may stand up for what is right
and be confident to make the best of new opportunities.
May our lives together this year be filled with your
Spirit,
as we follow the way of your Son, Jesus Christ;
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy
Spirit,
one God for ever and ever
People acclaim:
Amen.
Commentator: Please all be seated for the liturgy of the word.

The Liturgy of the Word
3. Then the reader goes to the ambo and reads the First Reading, while all sit and
listen.

First Reading: Acts 2: 1-11

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all
in one place together. And suddenly there came from the
sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the
entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to
them tongues of fire, which parted and come to rest on
each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy
Spirit and began to speak in different languages as the
Spirit enable them to proclaim.
Now they were devout Jews from every nation under
heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered
in a large crowd, but they were confused because each on
heard them speaking in his own language. They were
astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all
these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does
each of us hear them in his native language? We are
Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of
Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya
near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews
and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear
them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of
God.”
The word of the Lord.

All reply:
Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 104: 1, 24-30, 31, 34

Response: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the

face of the earth.

Bless the Lord, O my Soul.

O Lord my God, You are great indeed!
How manifold are your works, O Lord!
The earth is full of your creatures. R.

If you take away their breath, they perish

And return to their dust.
When you send forth your Spirit, they are created,
And you renew the face of the earth. R.

May the glory of the Lord endure forever;

May the Lord be glad in His works!
Pleasing to him be my theme;
I will be glad in the Lord. R.

Second Reading: Acts 2: 1-11

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the

Romans

Brothers and Sisters: Those who are in the flesh cannot

please God. But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary,
you are in the spirit, if only the spirit of God dwells in
you. Whoever does not have the spirit of Christ does not
belong to Him. But if Christ is in you, although the body
is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of
righteousness. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus
from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ
from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also,
through His Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently,
brothers and sisters, we are not debtors of the flesh, to
live according to the flesh. For if you live according to
the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to
death the deeds of the body, you will live.
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of
God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall
back into fear, but you receive the Spirit of adoption,
through whom we cry, “Abba, Father!” the Spirit himself
bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs
with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may
also be glorified with him.
The word of the Lord.
All reply:
Thanks be to God.

4. There follows the Alleluia or another chant laid down by the rubrics, as the liturgical
time requires.

The Priest, then proceeds to the ambo, there he says:

The Lord be with you.
The people reply:
And with your spirit.
The Priest:
A reading from the holy Gospel according to JOHN.
The people acclaim:
Glory to you, O Lord.
The Priest:
Jesus said to His disciples: “If you love me, you will
keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and
He will give you another Advocate to be with you
always.
“Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my
Father will love him, and we will come to him and
make our dwelling with him. Those who do not love me
do not keep my word; yet the word you hear is not mine
but that of the Father who sent me.
“I have told you this while I am with you. The
Advocate the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in
my name, will teach you everything and remind you of
all that I told you.

The Gospel of the Lord.

All reply:
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

I believe in one God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son
of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God,
Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our
salvation he came down
from heaven,
At the words that follow up to and including and became man,
all bow.
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was
buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will
have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of
life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored
and glorified, who has spoken through the
prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I

confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I
look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life
of the world to come. Amen.

General Intercessions

The Priest:

Let us lift up our common prayer to the Father so

that the Holy Spirit may guide and enlighten the
minds and the hearts of those entrusted to his
work of sanctification

Response: Lord, renew us with your Holy Spirit

Commentator:
That through the Spirit of fortitude and of wisdom, you
give to all the baptized the courage to proclaim that “Jesus is
the Lord”, give the leaders of our church, so that the message
of salvation bears fruit in the hearts of all. Let us pray to the Lord

Commentator:
That through the Spirit of hope and of good counsel, you
strengthen Christians in a sincere quest for unity, so that
through constant prayer and trusting in the Lord alone, they
may soon see the fulfillment of their desire. Let us pray to the
Lord

Commentator:
That through the Spirit of holiness and of zeal, you grant
to the Society, through the example of her martyrs, the grace to
witness to the Gospel to the utmost bounds of the earth, so that
the whole world may be set alight with the fire of your love
and consoled by the forgiveness of God which makes all
things new. Let us pray to the Lord

Commentator:
That through the Spirit of charity and of brotherhood, you
encourage those responsible for the government of nations to
search out ways of peace and of concord, so that all peoples
may be able to live in justice and in freedom. Let us pray to the
Lord

Commentator:
That through the Spirit of unity and of grace, you unite us
all in one body, through communion in your holy mysteries,
bless our school, the teachers and staff, as well as the students,
so that in giving thanks always to the Lord for the gifts we
have received, we may be able to witness to the beauty of our
vocation. Let us pray to the Lord

The Priest:
O Father,
Who enlightens all peoples with the living flame of your
Spirit, hear these our prayers of entreaty and give us the
Wisdom which comes from you so that we may in all
things seek your will and by the light of you alone choose
the one whom you have placed before us as successor to
guide our Society.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

5. Then follows the Universal Prayer, that is, the Prayer of the Faithful or Bidding
Prayers.
The Liturgy of the Eucharist

Blessed are you, Lord God of all

creation, for through your goodness we
have received the bread we offer you:
fruit of the earth and work of human
hands, it will become for us the bread of
life.
Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal.
If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words
aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:
Blessed be God for ever.
6. The Deacon, or the Priest, pours wine and a little water into the chalice, saying
quietly:
By the mystery of this water and wine
may we come to share in the divinity of
Christ who humbled himself to share in our
humanity.
7. The Priest then takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above the altar with
both hands, saying in a low voice:
Blessed are you, Lord God of all
creation, for through your goodness we
have received the wine we offer you:
fruit of the vine and work of human
hands, it will become our spiritual
drink.
Then he places the chalice on the corporal.
If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words
aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:
Blessed be God for ever.
8. After this, the Priest, bowing profoundly, says quietly:
With humble spirit and contrite
heart may we be accepted by you,
O Lord,
and may our sacrifice in your sight this
day be pleasing to you, Lord God.
9. If appropriate, he also incenses the offerings, the cross, and the altar. A Deacon
or other minister then incenses the Priest and the people.

10. Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying
quietly:
Wash me, O Lord, from my
iniquity and cleanse me from my
sin.
11. Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then
joining his hands, he says:

12
The Priest:
Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters),
that my sacrifice and yours
may be acceptable to God, the almighty
Father.
The people rise and reply:
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your
hands for the praise and glory of His name,
for our good and the good of all His Holy
Church.

Then the Priest, with hands extended, says:

Lord,
May the Spirit you promised
Lead us into all truth
And reveal to us the full meaning of this sacrifice.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.

All reply:

Amen

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS

14 THE ORDER OF MASS
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

83. V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.
V. Lift up your hearts.
R. We lift them up to the Lord.
V. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
R. It is right and just.

Father,
All-powerful and ever-living God
We do well always and everywhere to give you thanks,

Today you sent the Holy Spirit

On those marked out to be your children
By sharing the life of your Son,
And so you brought the paschal mystery to its completion.

Today we celebrate the great beginning of your Church

When the Holy Spirit made known to all peoples
The one true God,
And created from the many languages of man
One voice to profess on faith.

The joy of the resurrection renews the whole world,

While choirs of heaven sing for ever to your glory;
Then follows the Preface to be used in accord with the rubrics, which concludes:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of

hosts. Heaven and earth are full of
your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of
the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
THE ORDER OF MASS 15
The Priest, with hands extended, says:
You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have
created rightly gives you praise,
for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by the
power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life
to all things and make them holy,
and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so
that from the rising of the sun to its setting
a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.
83. He joins his hands and, holding them extended over the offerings, says:

Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you: by the

same Spirit graciously make holy
these gifts we have brought to you for consecration,
that they may become the Body and Blood
of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
at whose command we celebrate these mysteries.
The Priest, with hands extended, says:
For on the night he was betrayed
He himself took bread,
and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing,
broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:
He bows slightly.

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY

BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten, and genuflects in adoration.

84. After this, he continues:

In a similar way, when supper was ended,

He takes the chalice
and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he took the chalice,

and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, and gave the chalice to
his disciples, saying:
16 THE ORDER OF MASS
He bows slightly.

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS
THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.
He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in adoration.

85. Then he says:

The mystery of faith.

And the people continue, acclaiming:

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and

profess your Resurrection until you
come again.
The Priest, with hands extended, says:
Therefore, as we celebrate
the memorial of his Death and Resurrection, we
offer you, Lord,
the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation,
giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be
in your presence and minister to you.
Humbly we pray
that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,
we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout
the world,
and bring her to the fullness of charity, together
with N. our Pope and N. our Bishop* and all the
clergy.

Remember also our brothers and sisters

who have fallen asleep in the hope of the
resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy:
welcome them into the light of your face. Have
mercy on us all, we pray,
that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of
God, with the blessed Apostles,
and all the Saints who have pleased you
throughout the ages, we may merit to be coheirs to
eternal life,
THE ORDER OF MASS 17
and may praise and glorify you
through your Son, Jesus Christ.
86. He takes the chalice and the paten with the host and, raising both, he
says:
Through him, and with him, and in him, O God,
almighty Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor
is yours, for ever and ever.
The people acclaim:

Amen.
Then follows the Communion Rite,

The Communion Rite

The Priest, with hands joined, says:

At the Savior’s command
and formed by divine teaching,
we dare to say:
He extends his hands and, together with the people, continues:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come, thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our
trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not
into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

With hands extended, the Priest alone continues, saying:

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every
evil, graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He joins his hands.
The people conclude the prayer, acclaiming:
For the kingdom,
the power and the glory are yours now
and for ever.
18 THE ORDER OF MASS
Then the Priest, with hands extended, says aloud:
Lord Jesus Christ,
who said to your Apostles:
Peace I leave you, my peace I give you;
look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and graciously grant her peace and unity
in accordance with your will.
Who live and reign for ever and ever.

The people reply:

Amen.
87. The Priest, turned towards the people, extending and then joining his hands, adds:

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

The people reply:

And with your spirit.

88. Then, if appropriate, the Deacon, or the Priest, adds:

Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

And all offer one another a sign, in keeping with local customs, that expresses peace, communion,
and charity. The Priest gives the sign of peace to a Deacon or minister.

89. Then he takes the host, breaks it over the paten, and places a small piece in the chalice,
saying quietly:
May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord
Jesus Christ
bring eternal life to us who receive it.
90. Meanwhile the following is sung or said:
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on
us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on
us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

91. The Priest genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the paten or above
the chalice, while facing the people, says aloud:
Behold the Lamb of God,
behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
And together with the people he adds once:
Lord, I am not worthy
that you should enter under my roof, but only
say the word
and my soul shall be healed.
THE ORDER OF MASS 19

92. The Priest, facing the altar, says quietly:

May the Body of Christ keep me safe

for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Body of Christ. Then he takes the
chalice and says quietly:

May the Blood of Christ keep me safe

for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Blood of Christ.

93. After this, he takes the paten or ciborium and approaches the communicants. The Priest
raises a host slightly and shows it to each of the communicants, saying:

The Body of Christ.

The communicant replies:

Amen.

And receives Holy Communion.

With hands joined, the Priest says:

Let us pray.
O God, who bestow heavenly gifts upon your Church,
safeguard, we pray, the grace you have given,
that the gift of the Holy Spirit poured out upon her
may retain all its force
and that this spiritual food
may gain her abundance of eternal redemption.
Through Christ our Lord

The people reply:

Amen.
After the prayer of communion, the freshmen students, new officers, teachers will be in front of the altar for
the blessing.
